Veterinary Lieutenant George Henderson - returned from the Boer War on the SS Orient1902
At the same time Mrs F Henderson -""Wife" arrived on the SS Wakanui from Capetown
She telegrammed the army asking where he was .
The Army advertised looking for the whereabouts of George ?
Any clues as to what happened to Mrs F Henderson ?
George later married Elizabeth Shore 1904

Our George is SA1435 .His Mother was Mrs J Henderson of Henley(Allanton) Otago
On enlisting he was working at Maungakaramea Dairy company - it says as a blacksmith - actually a cheesemaker - he went on to manage dairy factories around Timaru and the west coast .

Just to ease confusion here >
Army Files are for two different men. SA 7650 ( is George Rankin HENDERSON -- b. 1883 - s/o Jane and Henry HENDERSON. 1911 = Railway employee of Warepa / 1928 -1957 = land agent at Dunedin. )
-
George Henderson and Elizabeth Shore - my Great Grandparents - separated around 1918 ,had been living in Temuka
we know very little of him.
George passed away in 1951 Wellington, on his death certificate - details of his wife are vague
several spaces then -"Elizabeth Griffin" - Griffin was an old family name
info was supplied by an army friend W Cressey of the Levin RSA

Hi Tommo
Just checking out some other records for you ... but was curious that in Image # 6 of George's file where it gives a timeline of his service, it states he "returned to NZ 28 August 1902". That is, (as far as I can tell), the same date which is showing on the date stamp on that telegram. ???
"Mrs F. HENDERSON" appears to be travelling "in style - saloon class" (which seems a little odd) ?
* Was she still in transit (per "Wakanui") when that telegram was sent ?

... just diverting from search for "Mrs F. Henderson" ...
* Can you provide what details you do already have of George, please ?
(It saves us having to dig further. ;) )

Other Rootschatters will know what information re marital status should be shown on his 1904 marriage printout, i.e. whether bachelor, widower. If divorced, what details are provided?
1904/421 Elizabeth Shore George Henderson

Hi Tommo
* Do you have the marriage record (certificate or printout) for George's marriage to Elizabeth SHORE ?
[This would tell us if George was a widower when he married in 1904. ]
* What info do you have for Elizabeth - e.g. was she born in NZ ? date of death ? who were her children ?

Yep - George was born 12 Nov 1870 son of James and Jane Henderson - Farmers and later Publicans of Berwick East Taieri Otago
On returning from the Boer War he Married Liz (Elizabeth Shore)
1904 - had 4 children Jane ,Lilly ,Len and Jonathon
George managed dairy factories around Timaru and Temuka also West Coast
Won many trophies for his cheese !
after they separated and Liz moved north 1919 we lost track of George
It seems he retired to Levin - living around Beach Rd
Details on his death notification to the army were given by Mr W Cressey of Levin

I'm wondering if Mrs F Henderson filled out Immigration or arrival forms in 1902 ?
if there are marriage records in Sth Africa in the vicinity of the 9th Contingent camp?
if the army had any record of the outcome- the chaplain perhaps?
a fascinating story .
-
... ooh I do like a man who makes good cheese ... I just love cheese ! ;D
Thanks for additional info Tommo, it helps a lot. ;)
Will keep digging.

Fascinating indeed. ;)
* "possible immigration or arrival form for Mrs F. HENDERSON - 1902".
A. I'm not too sure about what survives in the way of that type of record - I imagine (from all the searching I've ever done here) that we have only the "NZ Immigration Passenger Lists" (available at FamilySearch site) to rely on ?
A. Sorry, can't help with South African marriages (but perhaps post a question on the South Africa board, here at RootsChat ?)
A. Would think any correspondence re: finding George, would have appeared on his Army file ?

If "Mrs F. HENDERSON" maybe returned to South Africa in 1902 or 1903, she might have been included in the applications for entry permits into SA ?
Found the following at Archway (NZ Archives website).
The first paragraph talks of "non-military New Zealanders" ... but by way of her (probable) marriage to George she may have been classified as a "New Zealander" ? At any rate, being England-born, she was deemed a British Subject ... and for that matter so was NZ-born George ... ("New Zealanders" as a "species" came well after 1903. ;D)
"South Africa 1901-1902
A special record exists for non-military New Zealanders travelling to South Africa from mid-1901 to 1902 because the South African government required entry permits. Applications for and copies of the permits survive among the inward correspondence of the Colonial Secretary, later the Internal Affairs Department [IA 1].
People applying for entry permits to South Africa can be traced through the index to letters received 1901-1903 [IA 3/3/25] and the register of those letters 1901-1902 which gives individual names [IA 3/1/58]. The register entries give specific file references [IA 1]. "
