Title: "Molly" - what can it be short for?
Post by: ThrelfallYorky on Friday 22 December 17 16:30 GMT (UK)
The name "Molly" has started to plague me. I know I ought to know what it's a pet-name version of, but for the life of me I can't find the information. Suggestions please.... Help!

As well as being a name in it's own right, it can also be a pet name for Mary or Margaret.

According to "The Oxford Names Companion" Molly is a long established pet name for Mary. Maggie is the pet name for Margaret.

Thanks for all those. -and yes, I do remember Milly Molly Mandy, part of my childhood bookshelf! I'd a vague idea it might be Margaret or Mary, but not thought of Muriel! I'll try Mary, and if that doesn't work, try Margaret - don't think I'll try Edith Florence, somehow.....
Thanks again, Spidermonkey, stanmapstone, giggsycat, the Yokel, and lizdb, I'll see if I can get a bit further. Seasonal greetings, and all that!

Never knew a Molly. Not good grammar but here is the most famous one.

Just Molly and me
And baby makes three
We're happy in my Blue Heaven

Molly and I would be better grammar but too late to change now.

My gr Niece is Molly just because the parent loved the name, and 6 days ago I became a Gr Gran for the first time with a little Polly, again because they love the name. (Different family)
