Title: whitbank cottage, Gosmore census
Post by: moiramount on Saturday 30 December 17 16:01 GMT (UK)
Hi i am trying to find who used to live in my son in laws cottage through the census. I have tried without any success. It has been there for at least 200yrs. Its called Whitbank, Maydencroft Lane, Gosmore, Herts. It could have been called something else in the early days.
Any info very welcome. I have no names of who lived their previously.

Here's a ca 1900 OS map:
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=14&lat=51.9327&lon=-0.2785&layers=1&b=1

but sadly no house names on the 25 in to the mile map:

Have you tried looking at the 1939 register on Findmypast? If not named as Whytbank then you will be able to see the sequence of names, some will still be the same & you can see the name in 1939.

Do you know who your son-in-law bought the cottage from? If he has the Land Title number he can request previous transfers from the Land Register [a fee is payable for each transfer]. It may have been rented out before that of course so occupants need not have been owners. .

ADDED: 1901 census does not have house names in Maydencroft Lane RG13 piece 1300 fol 39

Whytbank [Yair] is the name of an estate in Scotland near Galashiels. The cottage may have been renamed by someone with a Scottish connection.

Is there a local history society who could help? Or library archive in Hitchin? Or long term residents nearby who may remember any previous names for the cottage?

Hi the only attempt to locate a Maydencroft Lane in Hertfordshire led me to a 1911 MAIDENCROFT Lane in the parish of Ipollitts, Hitchin?

Using the 1939 for Maidencroft Lane Hitchin only shows two named properties Ripley & Vine Cottages, others have just numbers or none at all.

Maidencroft Farm (Ippollitts) is named on the 1891 Census - but no mention of Maiden/Maydencroft Lane, let alone Whitbank Cottage.

From what I can see in 1881/91 the area around Maidencroft Farm was just called Gosmore or Gosmore Village?

In 1901 it has been transcribed as Maiden Croft Lane RG13/1300/39/8

Hi

Cecil Burdett Coutts is living in the Lane in 1901 onwards. ( Red Cow)

Mrs Ransom is living in "Whitfern" Cottage.

Do any of the buildings surrounding "s-i-l"'s property look like an old pub/beerhouse?

Bet Mrs Ransom is living in the little property at the end of "the row".

What has your "s-i-l" found?

Ray

1891
The dwelling(s) you are after would seem to be between . . . . .
#73 (John Lane - Maidencroft Farm - District 16 page 10 already mentioned), and
#55 (George Palmer - Red Cow - District 16 page 8 already mentioned)

The target dwelling would appear to be a row of cottages?
Did he buy all of them or just the end one, nearest Maidencroft Farm?

Hi all, thankyou very much for all your replies and information. Vine cottage is across the road from them and the red Cow pub was further down the lane. There is a grand house on the corner called Avenue farm, then View cottage, after this is Avenue cottage which is old then its Whitbank cottage. I forgot to say that it used to be two cottages one of which was known as Jenny's cottage. They have bought both and have renovated Whitbank and now doing Jenny's. In the grounds of Whitbank they uncovered a well in the front garden which was probably used in the past for getting water. In the house there used to be a bakers oven and it was said that people used to take their joints of meat to him who lived there to cook in his ovens.
I have an old photo of the house but i dont know how to upload it onto here.

There is a reference to a baker's wife (with children and an absent baker).

There is a reference to a "well" on various old maps.
(nearer the front of the plot on the avenue farm side)

Using the "leftover" heat from an oven is/was common practice in 'Erts.
( Don't know about anywhere else )

My own experience of that process is to use the heat to cook "Sunday Roast Beef"
Superb!

You then tend to ignore/forget that the ovens were used to cremate live-stock.
