Title: William Goodall, where did he go?Had he displeased his father?
Post by: g eli on Saturday 30 December 17 21:07 GMT (UK)
William Goodall was born 15 May 1847 in St Peter's Derby, the son of William & Mary. The last time I can find him is on the 1871 census when he was with his parents in Litchurch, Derbyshire.
He is mentioned in his father's will written 27 February 1896, he is to receive 5pounds, his wife Eliza is to receive 30 pounds for her own use.The other two surviving children receive personal bequests, and following the death of his 2nd wife the estate is to be divided between them.
I can find no marriage for him to an Eliza, the one in 1877 in Derby is not them.

I wonder why he would get 5 and his wife 30 - could wife Eliza refer to the person writing the will ie his wife(widow) and not the wife of the son  :-\

William (1847)'s parents were William & Mary.  William snr does appear to be referring to Eliza as the wife of William jnr unless William snr remarried to an Eliza?

Thank you all for your interest. Eliza is definitely the wife if William Junior. In the will she is referred to as Eliza the wife of my son William. The fact that she got so much more than William is why I wondered if William was in disgrace. The estate wasn't very large under 200 pounds.
I have all the birth marriage and death certificates or parish records for the rest of the family but William Jn is a mystery I keep coming back to him but so far no success.
William Senior was living in Spondon at the time of his death. Spondon is in the Shardlow registration district.

It could be possible that William had been given money prior to his father's death and that is why he wasn't left much in the will. According to the National Archives "In 1900, £200 0s 0d would have the same spending worth of 2005's £11,412.00"

Maybe William jnr wasn't good with money, maybe he had a history of wasting it, and Willm senior thought the money would be used more wisely (eg for essentials, or towards things for grandchildren) if it went to Eliza rather than William?

Thank you for your suggestions as to why William received less than his siblings, they are food for thought.
I still wonder what happened to him,
