Father - Walter Gladwell, mother - Bessie Ellen. They married in 1903 and Walter was in the army. James was one of the 'early' children.
(Walter) Edward(Ted) about 1903, George Edgar in 1907, John William born in 1913 in India, Wilfred Kenrick in 1916, Douglas Geoffrey in 1918, Patricia M in 1921, Peggy Ellen in 1922
But I can't find James's details! Anyone?

But I can't find James's details! Anyone?
What details are you referring to? His birth or some other details?
mother - Bessie Ellen
Maiden name was Field
-
Hi
When you say James was one of the 'early' children do you mean he was born prior to the marriage?
If so, try looking for the birth under the mother's maiden name.
Giggsy

Walter was born the year they married and then there is a birth for a Harry Albert Gladwell mmn Field in Portsmouth 1905 followed by the 1907 for George
Perhaps James was born in India? Family don't seem to be in England in 1911
-
When and where did James Gladwell die?
-
Giggs, Carole - I just can't find any 'James' details at all. Maybe I'm going blind! All the family names came from my cousin who said that 'Uncle Jim' was older than his father - John W. - who had been born in India...... I hadn't seen 'Harry' ...need to look again for him... :o
-
John William was born in India 1912 as per your post. There is a 5yr gap between George 1907 and John so it's very likely James was born in India which is why you can't find a birth reg on freebmd
If you can tell us where and when James died we can hopefully find his full D o B from his death reg providing he died 1969 onwards
Did your cousin confirm that "Uncle Jim" was his fathers brother and not his mothers?
-
Aha! - Found Harry, thanks! - Still no James, though...
-
Carole - 'Uncle Jim' - don't know when he died, but was in living memory, so 1950's plus... I'll keep looking!
-
Still no James, though...
See my reply above - probably born in India so there is no point looking on freebmd
Another possibility is that he was known as Jim but was actually a different christian name.
Who was he married to?
-
Carole - need to chase down more details and I take your point over James/Jim not being his first name. Maybe another day or two, will come up with more results. Thanks, so far!.... ;)
-
Have you found Walter's Army records? They often list wife and children.
-
Nanny - I found bits and pieces. I think this is him...
Sgt. Royal Horse Artillery 79th Batt. ( Also 1914-20 B.S.M. - Royal Field Artillery - Regimental Number 3410)
But no, no other records...
-
The 1911 on FS shows Walter as aged 30 b Ipswich and serving overseas. Have you checked the 1911 for Bessie?
-

Carole - I found Harry, thanks. Uncle Jim is definitely 'Gladwell' - unless cousin tells me different! Cousins mother is my side of the family, so no 'Jim' there!..... :)
As you said, probably born in India.
-
Oh Dear! ...Finally, someone on that side of the family has come up with the answer!
...Harry Albert is the elusive 'Jim'!
I have no idea how it came about, or why he was called 'Jim', but the problem is solved - there is no 'James'.
Thank you all for your support!
