Title: Willsworth surname in Rutland
Post by: jalrose on Tuesday 02 January 18 03:17 GMT (UK)
In 1806, John Willsworth Forster was baptised in Barrowden, son of William Forster and Mary nee Woods who had married in 1804.  He married Catharine Shelton Swift in Barrowden etc.  Does anyone know where the "Willsworth" name originates?  thank you

Parish Church of St. Nicholas, Gunby
Isaac Woods of this Parish, Husbandman, and Sarah Willsworth of the Parish of St. George, Stamford were married in this Church, by licence, this 24th day of April 1774 by me, Daniel Dowke, Curate.

Both made their mark, witnesses John Reeve and John Francis.

Have you identified Mary Woods' parents?

Sorry, no information about Mary Woods, only that she was apparently John Willsworth Forster's mother.  3 more generations after John carry Willsworth as a second Christian name in the line I am following.  Thank you for checking

According to the 1851 census, Mary was born in Gunby, Lincolnshire, in 1777. I can't find a baptism but there is this one:

John Willsworth Woods
Baptism: 3rd Jul 1785
Gunby St Nicholas
Parents: Isaac and Sarah

i.e. the family as mentioned by hanes teulu.

Also Sarah 1780, Ann 1782 and Thomas 1787.

Thank you for checking.  Solves the mystery of the introduction of Willsworth to the Forster family. Great work. :)

Just a curiosity perhaps: I have a recent isolated occurrence of Wil(l)sworth in my own research - with no obvious evidence so far as to where it came from:

Wilsworth Worthington was born May 1850, the son of William Worthington and Elizabeth Palmer just over the border in Grafton Underwood, Northamptonshire (she was from Brigstock)

Be interesting to know if there was a strand linking this "sighting" to yours

Alan

Yes. Alan, always a possible link.  However I have insufficient wherewithal to research in UK, and have also come to understand that Isaac Woods and Sarah Willsworth may not be Directly Related to the Mary Woods on the tree I am researching.  Good luck with your search though.
