Title: Updating Ancestry public trees from laptop data?
Post by: bugbear on Tuesday 02 January 18 09:57 GMT (UK)
I maintain my genealogical data on my laptop, with multiple levels of backup.

I have previously (on occasion) upload a GEDCOM of my data up to an Ancestry private tree; this helps me with searching, since Ancestry will auto-fill the parameters for an individual. When either working to extend the reach of my research, or "infilling" data as Ancestry bring new sources on line, this is very helpful.

I have not found a way to refresh/sync the tree by uploading a new GEDCOM to it. This isn't really a problem, I just delete the old tree, and make a new one from the new upload. Simples!

Enter DNA.

It is now important to me that I can allow selected people (cousins discovered via DNA matches) to see my tree. So I want to allow them to view it. Of course, given the nature of DNA research, I will shortly be updating my database quite a lot.  :)

But if I upload by making a new tree (my previous technique) all the people granted access to the old tree will be shut out.

So - what's the best way to upload/sync my database up to Ancestry?

(I will NEVER make changes to the Ancestry tree, so I will never need to transfer data the other way)

What programme are you using on your laptop
As I believe Ancestry only allow their Family treemaker and Roots Magic to sync but could be wrong

Ancestry no longer own FTM, it is owned by MacKiev. The only one it will sync with now is FTM2017. I don't know about RootsMagic.

I think you will have to re-invite everyone each time you create a new tree unless you purchase some software which will sync with Ancestry. Your choices are either FTM , from Software McKiev, or Roots Magic, which I don't think has quite the same functionality as FTM. I watched a video about it a while back when I was considering changing. I think this is it :

I have the basic free version of Rootsmagic and it syncs with the tree that I have on Family Search.  But seems that they now include Ancestry

My Resident Nerd says if you are using Linux you can sometimes get programmes written for Windows to work if you run them through "Wine". It may or may not work, but he reckons it's always worth a try. ;)

This may be worth a look:

Hmm. I'd then have to work out how to get my data from Gramp to a Wine Resident roots magic.

Still, a tricky option is better than no options.

I don't know if it will work, but you could try converting the Gramp to a Gedcom and then loading it onto the Rootsmagic.

It may just take a little research but it probably could be done.    This may help

I have just downloaded the free version of rootsmagic and you can sync with Ancestry but only if you pay for the full version this was on windows 10 but presume it would work the same with linx

Roots Magic Paid Version (not exactly expensive compared to the price of FTM2017) sync's manually with Ancestry trees after the initial download (or upload).  It compares the two trees and you have to accept the changes at which point it downloads or uploads them.  Yes it can be laborious but I've found it helpful spotting some mistakes on the Ancestry tree (which I host for a friend) where merging of records had added name variations and other things.  However, for a program that isn't resource hungry (unlike FTM2014 when I used it), its not bad at all for the money.

Last time I looked they were still offering a discounted new licence purchase for any FTM owners.

I believe I have found a useful way forward - for DNA matching, only the direct ancestors matter.

So I have used the filtering features of my Gramps to export a limited number of generations, and stripped off most of my 5 years research. But there's enough for DNA purposes.

I have uploaded this skeleton tree and made it public.

This doesn't solve but bypasses the issue of updating my "big tree".
