Title: My Heritage - Contacting members
Post by: venelow on Tuesday 02 January 18 19:23 GMT (UK)
Hi Rootschatters

I found an old message on a genealogy site and would really like to contact the author. After several searches and dead email addresses I have found this person now has a website on My Heritage.

This is stated to be a free site but then I also see complaints about the 14 day trial so I am a bit wary.

If I sign up for a basic membership (for a tree of 250 people) will I be able to contact other members? Or do I actually have to spend money to make contact with another member?

Advice on this point welcome.
Thanks
Venelow

Thanks Ray

I forgot to mention I live in Canada. I could contact them by email but I was hoping for someone with actual experience of the site would answer.

There's stuff about a scam on Facebook but it was blocked from me because I don't do Facebook.

Hi

Would help us if you'd add the relevant bits to your profile?

Canada ‎1-800-MYHERITAGE (1-800-987-9000) (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/tel:(+1) 1 800 987 9000)Billing & Sales: Mon–Fri, 7am–5pm MST; Technical Support: Sun–Thu, 11pm–3pm MST

Scam?
What detail have you got? Would you tell us?
Where did you get the details of the scam from?

You/we could be helping others?

They don't look like scammers, trading for 14 years-ish?

Sorry this is probably the first post I have made and forgotten to mention my location.

I don't know the details about the "scam" because after 3 seconds a pop-up covered up the post and demanded I join Facebook to read it. There seems to be a lot of complaints about My Heritage on the internet but I have no experience of the site so do not know if they are valid or not. However I am wary.
I am already subscribed to 2 genealogy companies and cannot afford a third.

I would just like to contact a person on My Heritage about a Genforum post they made in 2001.

Hi

I use the free version of My Heritage.  It is not possible to contact people who may own a tree on it without having a full subscription.

You can confirm matches however if you have a tree on there, and you can view the website for that tree, but will not be able to contact the owner.  I have managed to look at trees for the Smart Matches of my ancestors, but can't contact the owners, which can be frustrating.

I also have a free membership in the hope of making contact with a member there.
I've tried using the name Sinann RootsChat in the hope they would find me here. Hasn't worked so far but the idea might for someone else.

I have made contact with a couple via Facebook.  You just have to keep trying til you find the right one.  I restricted my search to South Africa because that's where the owners of the trees were based.

Thank you for your responses 3sillydogs and Sinann. I rather thought that might be the case. Thanks for the confirmation.

The site is confusing because they say it's free and then they also say they are having a New Year Sale with 50% off. But it seems you have to start a tree before you get to know the expenditure involved.

Happy New Year to all Roots Chatters (especially your lovely dogs 3silly) and may everyone have good luck with their searches in 2018.

Thank you Venelow.  And the same to you.

I have a basic tree on there, but I have had some valuable tips and hints that I haven't had from other sources.  My research is mainly South Africa and there seem to be quite a few South Africans or folk whose research centres here with trees, so for me it is useful even without the subscription, which with the exchange rate would give my OH a coronary ;D ;D ;D
