Title: Brighton Street in 1841
Post by: Kath77 on Wednesday 03 January 18 20:41 GMT (UK)
Can anyone read the street name on this 1841 census please?

It's quite unusual to have had the street name noted, but I cannot work it out! My gx5 grandparents Friend and Elizabeth Paine are living at no.2. I think it's central Brighton in The Lanes area if that helps - later on they lived on Meeting House Lane and Poplar Place.

Thanks,
Katherine

I was wondering about something like Chinter Gardens   :-\ :-\

The first two letters look just like the beginning of Charlotte don't they?   :-\

Chuters gardens? :-\  :-\

That crossed my mind as well Wiggy. Underneath is No 1 but I can't make out the rest.

Well Find My Past has transcribed it as Chesters Gardens.

I think it's Chesters Gardens.

That is mentioned in the description of the enumeration district on page 1 of the set of images at Ancestry,  I'm not sure how you find it at FindMyPast.  I can't figure out the rest though.

Yes, I think Gardens. My first thought was also Clintons, but now i'm thinking Chuters or Chutens  as the second letter might be an h (looking at Charlotte), and the enumerator is quite good at dotting the i's...

Chesters Gardens. As daisypetal says, it's clearly written as that in the description of the enumeration district.

Edit see reply #11 ::)

Bingo! Thanks Wiggy - yes Chuters Gardens. It has now been demolished but was part of The Lanes area according to www.brightonhistory.org.uk/streets/streets_c.html (via Google).

Thanks all :-)

You're right, not Chesters but Chuters.

Edit  What I had originally read as the 'es' of Chesters I now see is actually a letter 'u'.

If my eyes aren't deceiving me, I think you can just about see Chuters Gardens on a sign on the wall.

Good evening,

Just for clarity some of the facts given in the links are incorrect in particular the brighton history link. Nos 10 to 18 were knocked down in 1933 to make way for the swimming pool (later an ice rink). Now Family Investments insurance company. Numbering in old Brighton was, still is, consecutive and not odd/even. So 10 to 18 was 9 properties, quite a large frontage.

Nothing to do with Churchill Square which was built in the 60s and does not come east as far as West st.

Chuters Gardens would not have been in the Lanes, they are to the east of West st by at least 2 streets. In the area bounded by East st, Ship st, North st and the Kings rd.

Yes, John you're right - not in The Lanes. It looks like those houses were demolished when West Street was widened in the 1920s/30s. If this picture is accurate they would've been just south of St Paul's, but not as far south as what is now the Odeon cinema. Little Russell Street was the next street south and where the rest of the family lived - I had always assumed it was round there as Russell Street car park occupies that are now...!

Good afternoon,

One glaring mistake in my previous post. The old odeon was immediately south of the church, now Family Investments. The sports hall/ice rink was south of that, now Premier inn.

If you look at that area on st view you can see the church and Family investments. Between them is a small garden area where no's 17, 18 and the passageway to the cottages was.

Good evening,

Found a map of the west st area. I've marked in red the St Pauls cloisters which is behind the gate in Jool's link.

In blue is Chuters Gdns, most of the small rds and passages are not named and those that are can't be read easily. The map unfortunately stopped before west st itself so the little jink at that end may not be totally accurate.

Fab! Thanks Jon and John :-)

The irony is after a little more research I think these guys are not my direct ancestors, but uncle and aunt, however both brothers had a daughter called Susannah, and lived a few roads apart so I'm sure they were on friendly terms!

Love local history though ;D
