Title: Beaton family (again) in South Uist Benbecula
Post by: Beaton1969 on Wednesday 03 January 18 21:00 GMT (UK)
Hello I am new to the site and am hoping someone could help me out-  I have read loads of stuff on the Beatons from Benbecula on root chat however I am not finding the people that I am looking for.  I am trying to trace my family tree. Am getting my knickers in a knot  :) So I am trying to find info on Beatons from Hacklet or Redbank -:Mary Beaton who was a weaver and was born around 1827. I cant find a record of her birth or her parents or if she married- She is on the census of 1911 as head of house 84 years old - her daughter was called Margaret who has put on her marriage certto William MacDonald that her father was Farquhar Beaton - I cant find any records for this- -she worked as a domestic servant -she was born 1858 -  and died in 1922.Margaret had two kids that I can find -there could be more  :) 1 is Mary Beaton born on 18/1/1878- says illegitimate on birth cert. and Donald Beaton born 24/7/1880 also illegitimate. He is my great grandfather. Just extra info he served with the cameron highlanders and was wounded in ww1. So does anyone have any knowledge of these Beatons. Hope its not too confusing and thanks

Hi there. Welcome to RootsChat  :)

What details are showing from the death cert of Margaret's mother, Mary Beaton? Wondering whether you will find some clues there on her parents.

Have you got details on Margaret from her birth cert or early census entries?

Maybe the surname Beaton had earlier variants? Not unusual.

There is this 1855 birth cert index entry for example, https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYPV-6P2

1855 was the first year of Scottish statutory registration. For that year, entries ran over two pages of the register and included much more info. This cert should show whether these parents, Farquhar and Mary were married and include date and place of marriage, along with their ages and other details on them.

I couldn't see further children to a couple with these names, other than the Margaret born in 1855.

Monica

ADDED: Some confirmation of the Bethune and Beaton connection here www.electricscotland.com/webclans/atoc/beaton2.html

Possible entry for Margaret in 1861 with maternal or paternal grandmother?

Mary Bethune 72 Farmer's Widow, North Uist
Flora Bethune 24 daughter b. South Uist
Marion MacSween 9 grandchild b. South Uist
Margaret Beaton 6 grandchild b. South Uist

Address: Howmore, South Uist

And for 1871:

Mary Bethune 77 cotter b. N Uist
Mary Bethune 48 wool weaver daughter b. S Uist
Flora Bethune 33 domestic servant daughter b. S Uist
Marion MacSween 19 grandchild b. South Uist
Catherine Macintyre 8 grandchild b. South Uist
Margaret Mcintyre 4 grandchild b. South Uist

Address: Mary Bethune's, South Uist

Likely you have 1881 with Mary and daughter Margaret, with Margaret's two young children.

I have just added 1871 census above. Certainly looks like your Margaret's family. Have you got 1881 - 1901?

Hi I have the 1881 census with Mary as head of family, Margaret 23 as daughter, mary the granddaughter whose 3 and Donald at 9 months old. Went on the link you sent and have found another family member Margaret married a William MacDonald and had a son called Kenneth - she's listed as MargaretBeaton MacDonald. It all helps. :)

Sorry been away for a few day and catching up...

If you don't have 1891 and 1901, they expand Margaret's family with William McDonald. You mentioned you had 1911.

1891:

Mary Beaton 63 Weaver Of Tweed
Margret McDonald 34 Weaver Of Tweed
Angus McDonald 2 grandchild
Mary Beaton 12 grandchild
Donald Beaton 10 grandchild
Mary Ann Beaton 4 grandchild

Address: Haclet, South Uist

1901:

Margaret (likely should read Mary on the original) Beaton 71 Wool Spinner Retired
Margaret Mcdonald 44 weaver
William Mcdonald 66 Son-in-law Cattleman Retired
Angus Mcdonald 12
Ann Mcdonald 8
Kenneth Mcdonald 6
Marion Maclean 5 grandchild

Hi,
I'm a descendant of Donald Beaton as well, I've just sent you a message.  :)  Monica has the correct family - Margaret was the daughter of Farquhar Beaton & Mary Beaton, b.1855 in Howmore S. Uist (registered under the name variant Bethune).  Farquhar and Mary were not married - Farquhar went on to marry Ann MacLellan, while Mary remained single.

Margaret Beaton had the following children:
Mary b.1878
Donald b.1880
Collin b.1883 (died young)
Mary Ann Beaton b.1885

She also had the following children from her marriage to William Macdonald:
Angus b.1888
Kenneth b.1891 (died young)
Ann b.1893
Kenneth b.1895
Joanna b.1899 (died young)

I have traced this line of Beatons back quite a few generations, if you're interested.  :)

I realise it's an old thread but I'm currently working on Beatons although I have no idea whether connected or not yet?

However, as the name Farquhar isn't abundant on Uist/Benbecula/surrounding areas whether Beaton or any other surname, I thought this DC may be of interest if you don't already have it?...

02 Nov 1877 Lochcarnan, S/Uist, John Beaton, Farmer, 92 yrs (b c1784/5) widower of Flora MacSween
Parents Farquhar Beaton & Janet MacLean (m/s)
Informat Farquhar Beaton (Son)

Could Farquhar (son) be the father of Margaret who married William MacDonald?

On the same page;

15 Nov 1877 Lochskiport (sic), S/Uist, John Beaton, 6 days
Parents Donald Beaton & Margaret MacLellan (m/s)

Hello Annie,
That matches the info I have -  that Farquhar Beaton, shepherd, born in Bracadale Skye in 1830 to John Beaton and Flora MacSween, was the father of Margaret Beaton who m. William Macdonald.  (Farquhar is listed as Margaret's father on her birth, marriage and death records.)  The Donald Beaton you mentioned (who m. Margaret MacLellan), was Farquhar’s younger brother, per his d.r. 1900 in South Uist. There's quite a bit of history about their father, John, who was interviewed by Alexander Carmichael for his book Carmina Gadelica...if it's of interest, let me know & I will have a look for it.

Hi sm,

I'm not descended of Beatons although I have them in my tree & I'm helping one of their many descendants although I'm in the early stages  :)

I've been gathering up bits & pieces of info. (as we do) which may come in handy later;

https://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/cg2/cg2041.htm

"This was in 1877. John Beaton died in 1881, aged 92"

I came across the death in my own Uist certs. on the same page which was 02 Nov 1877

I can email it if you don't have it?

https://www.gravestonephotos.com/public/cemeterynamelist.php?cemetery=1435

I'm unsure at this stage whether the above Beatons are connected to my line of enquiry?

Edit to remove link which isn't working i.e. search for...Diary Of Fr John MacCormick

"We took Miss Beaton home and there met Mrs Beaton of Kalgoorlie, Australia. Originally from Lewis – she is a convert."  ;D (Amusing)

Likewise, who were Miss & Mrs Beaton in Oct 1939?

1884 - MC for John Beaton & Flora McEachen 1884 (Ardkenneth (RC), Howmore) (The line I'm following)

On the same page is the marriage of;

16 Jun 1884 - Donald MacDougall & Flora Beaton (CoS, Howmore)
Flora was dau of Farquhar & Ann MacLellan

I can email this too if you don't have it?

Intriguingly, one 2 of the witnesses to both (different churches) were Donald MacMillan & Alister (Alexander) MacDonald (see below) i.e I'm wondering if this is a sign the 2 Beatons were related?

Often there are 'serial' witnesses but I haven't come across this in different churches i.e. I don't think they were a 'serial' witnesses but what was their connection(s)?

Annie

Add...Can you tell me who the g/parents of Margaret MacLellan (married to Donald Beaton) were please?

The line I'm following has;

1872 (Bornish (RC), S/Uist) - Donald MacLellan & Penelope Beaton
Witnesses Allan MacDonald & Alexander MacDonald

Parents of Donald MacLellan, Gilbert MacLellan & Mary MacKay (m/s)

I found an interesting story on a Norman MacDonald of Redbank, Creagorry, Benbecula (1883) & thought I'd post incase he's related to your William MacDonald?

You know the Beatons were hereditary doctors for the Clanranald? They specialised in medicine and may have trained overseas in Ireland and France through the centuries. It's a pity we can't find direct link-link family genealogies showing the connections.

I link to the family distantly via Marion Beaton (born c.1789) who married Roderick MacDonald of Drimsdale if I remember right. I'd love to hear some ideas as to who her parents were. I only have the one child for this couple, and both died before 1855, which makes it very difficult to say. Were there Beatons in Drimsdale though?

Hi Anthony,

Can you please tell us the name of the only child, when/where born/married/died, names of his/her children & what occ. was given for Roderick MacDonald, where were the families in 1841/51?

Certainly dead by 1841, they are pre census families. That's why I only have one son for the family, I think he was called Donald MacDonald. The key is that Roderick came from Drimsdale, which is shown in croft records. But beyond that no information seems to be current. I don't know if his Beaton wife was from Drimsdale also?

Hi Anthony,

If you only think the son was named Donald, how did you work this out & his father was Roderick from Drimsdale as it will be very difficult to check any potential records if you're not sure of the names?

I asked when possible son Donald was (circa dates) born/married/who to/died along with names of children to help with any possible findings but your reply was so vague, I gave up after a while with nothing definite to go on.
A DC for this Donald if post 1855 in Scotland should name parents as well as his father's occ. which I enquired about too.

Drimsdale from Croft Records, was this Croft Rentals, Croft History or...?

What is the actual wording on Drimsdale as this may have been where Roderick was at one time not necessarily born there?

There was a Drimsdale House (unsure if it still exists) but at one time it was a Manse although I've been unable to dig up anything about it while it was a Manse?

I already have his death record, though as I can't access my files right now, I can't give you an exact answer. I was in contact with the genealogy service in Harris, and they confirmed Drimsdale and the couple named on the death record. Because it goes so far back no other children are known. I haven't been able to work anything out as regards the location and inhabitants, of that period. I was simply wondering about any Beatons who might have lived there, in the 1700s, to make educated guesses as to family links. This is the best we can do this far back unfortunately.
