Title: WALKER, Jacksonville, FL. - Sharpsburg, GA.
Post by: YeOldeMuso on Sunday 07 January 18 12:34 GMT (UK)
Hi, from England.
I am hoping to find someone linked to the WALKER family of Jacksonville, Florida, and Sharpsburg, Georgia.

William and Harriet WALKER emigrated from England to Jacksonville, Florida in 1919.
The 1920/30/40 census all show them at: Precinct 28, Hogan, Duval, Jacksonville, Florida.

The men of the family were Machinists in the Jacksonville Shipyards, with records up to 1988.
In 2001, a later generation moved to Sharpsburg, Georgia (details further below).

Family of William = Harriet WALKER.
William WALKER b.1871 m. Harriet WALKER (nee LUDLOW) b.1870 (both born England)
George William (son) b.1895, Woolwich, England

George William WALKER (b.1895) m. Margaret E. (b.1895, Ireland).
They had 4 children that I know of:
James A.         b.1922 Duval
Georgina M.     b.1924 Duval (m. Griswold SPARKS)
Francis William b.1925
George T.         b.1930 Duval

Francis William WALKER (b.1925) m. Dorothy M. CROOK 1943, Baker County, Florida.
[Moved to Sharpsburg, Georgia in 2001].
They had 4 children that I know of:
William Brian (died before his father)
F. (dau)
C.J. (dau)
W. (son)

Francis William and Dorothy WALKER moved to Sharpsburg, GA. in 2001 to be close to their family, so it would appear someone had previously moved there from the original family home in Jacksonville, Florida.

Francis William WALKER died in Sharpsburg in 2014.
He was known as 'Bill', and 'Poppie' to his grandchildren.
Much of what I have found regarding Francis William and Dorothy WALKER came from an Obituary I was fortunate enough to find for Francis William WALKER in Peachtree City, GA.

This is about all I have, so any help or suggestions to find a living relative would be appreciated.
With thanks,
Pete Fisk

RootsChat is meant for finding ancestors, rather than living relatives. Although anyone could pm you those details.
Personal details of any people known or thought to be living will be removed, in accordance with RootsChat policy, to avoid spamming and other abuses. So people here will be able to give you general tips and hints how to proceed, but not any concrete details.
You will also find more tips here:

I have deleted the grandchildren etc... I am not sure how to check if the others are still alive or not. Should I just delete the ones beyond the William Brian - the one who died before his father, Frances, Connie and William the doctor?

The Montreal connection you are coming up with is of more significance than you can imagine, as for years we have lived with the rumour "someone went to Canada", but found nothing to back it up.
Now we have all this, PLUS a sister (Florence) we never even knew about, let alone in Montreal!

Margaret E. FOSTER - I searched high and low for that marriage (England and USA), without any luck at all. I never dreamed of looking at Canada!
I never knew Margaret's surname in the first place, so that was difficult enough, let alone having to think about looking in another country altogether - and one in between England and America I had no chance!
That is so good, thank you again!  8)

There was a marriage in Woolwich - recorded Q 4 - Oct/Nov/December 1916 - Ernest C Baylis  to  Florence Walker - 1 d 2350 - this might be worth following up to see if it is your Florence in Montreal.
Strange Florence Harriet is described as a servant in 1911

Thanks for all the new stuff Sandra, you are so quick and rapidly leaving me behind - even though I have had chance to catch up!  :-[
The Margaret Foster attachment is good to see - I am so out of touch as to where to find these things now as I have had a long break from all this.

As for our William WALKER being born in Woolwich - and when:
Firstly - yes, we have him at 36 Rectory Grove, Woolwich.

I see William claims to be born 11 Feb 1871 on his naturalization record, but he also seems to have noted Florence's birth incorrectly as we have it as 1890 (Q3).
I should explain there (re. Florence) - I was wrong when I said we didn't have Florence on record - sorry, I did have her after all, so we already had her details.
Of course, we could still be wrong!  :-[

I don't recognise the South metropolitan District School bit, so I can't really help with that, sorry.
We actually have him registered as b.1872 in Charlton, but this is close to Woolwich so it could possibly be seen as the same.

Re the Baylis/Walker marriage...
The Bayliss name doesn't mean anything to me, and is most confusing as we already have our Florence (again, strangely shown as a Servant!), but included at home in 1911 with her own family.
We have often wondered why she was entered as a Servant!
The address was:
43 Bethel Road, Welling, Kent.
William 40 born Charlton, Kent
Harriet 41 born Gloucestershire
Florence Harrier 20 born Woolwich (servant)
Francis Henry 15 born Woolwich

The marriage for Florence wasn't until 1916 - looking at London Electoral Register. Florence Baylis and Henry Ernest Conway Baylis are at Mercury Road Woolwich in 1929
Doesn't appear to be any children to the couple

Sorry, I replied to your (most clear) 'marriage' post with details from the 1911 Census.....think I'm getting tired, must be to make a mistake like that!  :-[
I'll check out that marriage - I have Find My Past, so I'll do it now.
Yes, it would seem strange the wife was the servant - although equally strange in the 1991 Census I mentioned, with the daughter being noted as a servant - if this is the same Florence it seems she must have enjoyed it!

These could certainly be William's parents and siblings! From memory we haven't gone back beyond the basics of William and Harriet's marriage (I need to check on my other computer) as our original intentions lay more toward the emigration side of things, but I am pretty sure this is all new information - so again, great, and thanks for taking all this trouble!
Basically, I took this over from my cousin many years ago (who only had the very raw basics), and never went this far back as we didn't have the facilities back then. It's only these past two days I have started back into all this, after several years.
How lucky we are these days!  :)

Re the mystery Arthur....
My cousin found an Arthur Walker, aged 25, nationality English arriving in Quebec, Canada on 31 May 1925 aboard Canadian Pacific Line SS Duchess of Athol.
There were references for looking it up in the National Archives of Canada, but not on line - or at least, not at the time.
No other details so we couldn't tell if it is of interest or not.
Right age, but it could be anyone.

GRO does not have a birth for Arthur Walker in 1900 - Woolwich - or mother with maiden surname Ludlow.

You can register on this site for free - it gives mothers maiden names for birth records.

Yes, I heard about the GRO site just recently.
I will ring my cousin tomorrow and ask her what she can remember regarding the mystery Arthur - bearing in mind how long ago it was I'm not sure what she will come up with, but it's worth a shot.
I think, in reality, she may have got things mixed up - although she was adamant at the time that there was an Arthur who went to Canada, so who knows.

I have to close shortly, so I will leave that with you to ponder over if you feel inclined.
Thank you again for all your trouble today, I hope i haven't kept you from anything important!

Hi again Sandra, sorry to bother you again but I am trying to find my way around some of the links you sent me - basically, so I can find things myself without having to ask all the time!
Could you possibly tell me where you found the Naturalization info - was it within the FamilySearch (USA) link you sent me?
Also, the Boarder Crossing bits; I would like to see the originals etc, and hopefully from there I can look to see if there are any more bits of interest.
Thanks, Pete

Ancestry.com....
I did manage to get close with this, but I don't subscribe so couldn't get any further.
I do subscribe to Find MY Past though, so I'll take a look in there as they may have similar records. If not, I'll go to Ancestry when my present subscription expires.
Thanks again.  :)

You would need the ancestry worldwide subscription to view US records Pete.

Yes, I was thinking about changing my subscription this time too, but I stayed with Find My Past. Never mind, it will give me something to do next year!  :)
I have gained a lot from everything you sent anyway and I have managed to find some of the bits from the Family Search links.

Suppose everything can't be free, as on family search, otherwise we wouldn't need to pay for worldwide subscriptions.  ;D

Did you find Arthur that you were looking for ?

Not exactly, but I think he was possibly the James ARTHUR Foster we have - the father George William WALKER's wife - the one you found, Margaret Foster married in Weston, Ontario in 1919.
The reason I think this is - on asking my cousin again (about how she originally got the information), she revealed he MAY NOT have actually been a relative after all, and possibly just a friend.
I also wondered if - as George and Margaret (nee Foster) had a son named James A. (probably James ARTHUR, after his grandfather), the WALKER family may have referred to James Arthur Foster senior as 'Uncle Arthur'.
I doubt I will get any closer than this!
