Title: Tragic death of Ada Assister in Pennsylvania 1920
Post by: noytd on Monday 08 January 18 08:55 GMT (UK)
I am trying to track down any sort of information such as an obituary for the sister of my 3x great grandmother. Ada Assister (nee Stevens) (1867-1920) was the wife of the Reverend Harry Assister (1864-1944). Both left the UK to settle firstly in Canada before relocated to Pennsylvania.

I came across a mention of the tragic circumstances of the death in an old family letter, and was then able to locate the death certificate. I was wondering if this tragic event might have been covered by the media of the day and if anybody might have access to be able to find this?

Many kind thanks for any help or information.

A small point which may help anyone searching - the surname seems to be Assiter (per the certificate and the Sep qtr 1889 marriage) rather than Assister as you have it in your post.

I don't know whether you will find anything in the papers of the day.  Sadly this was not an uncommon cause if death, and over the years I have seen several death certificates where the deceased (most often a young child wearing a nightdress) died in such an awful way.

Many thanks for the reply. You are very correct it is Assiter, my lesson of the day is to make sure spellcheck doesn’t creep in!

I have limited access to US newspapers via Find my past. I have found mention of the Reverend Assiter but nothing of his wife or his later remarriage (which is mentioned in the family letters).

I found a blurb about Ada Assiter's death at the bottom of the front page of the Pittsburgh Press of Mar. 24, 1920. The newspaper is accessible through the Google News Archive. It is no longer maintained by Google, but it is still searchable. Navigation on a particular page, however, can be a problem.

Right click on this link and open it in a new tab to see the newspaper: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=djft3U1LymYC&dat=19200323&printsec=frontpage&hl=en

The item about Ada Assiter is at the bottom left of the front page. The best way to navigate, if you can read the headline at the bottom of the page, is by clicking on it. Otherwise, just click on any headline on the front page and then use the arrow keys to go down and left.

Though not over far from the city of Pittsburgh, Leechburg in 1922 was small and rural. Details of local news would have been covered by newspapers of nearby towns. The only other relevant newspaper that I found in the Google News Archive was from Greensburg, a larger town about 20 miles to the southeast. A check of the Greensburg Tribune editions for a few days after March 22, 1922 turned up nothing.

Regards,
John

Attached is the item about Ada Assiter on part of the front page from the Pittsburgh Press of March 23, 1920. Scroll to the left side of the of the page if this is too large for the screen.

I can't seem to find the death Ada's death certificate on this post. The newspaper item says that she died in Mercy Hospital, which is in the city of Pittsburgh. But I seem to recall that another hospital is listed on the death certificate--St. Margaret.
