Title: Antrim/Rathlin Catherine Wilkinson (McQuilkin)
Post by: dcassley on Friday 12 January 18 07:09 GMT (UK)
My great grandfather Thomas mother is Catherine McQuilkin and father is Alexander Cassley (some documents found under Capley).  They also had children John, James and Alexander.

Catherine died in 1938 at 75 years old and was sometimes called Kate.

Some documents show Catherine as being born in Boston, Massachusetts while others suggest she may for been born in Antrim. Family stories suggest a connection with Rathlin Island.

Thomas Baptism was sponsored by a Margaret McQuilkin, perhaps a sibling or mother of Catherine?

Catherine father is listed as being John Wilkinson on her marriage certificate. Ellen Devlin and Thomas Cassley served as witnesses.

I'm interested to find out if someone can help with McQuilkin history with more information on Catherine, where she was born and who her parents/grandparents are. If she was in fact born in Massachusetts it would be interesting if someone had more information on the McQuilkin migration to the west and why they migrated back.

Just a couple of items to help folk see where you're coming from: (1) the 1911 Ireland census showing her birthplace as Boston America; (2) her marriage of 1883 ...

I apologize for not putting enough information.

Alexander and Katherine were married in Ballycastle in 1883. They are Roman Catholic.  Alexander is listed as a Servant from Breen and Catherine is listed as a Housekeeper from Glenchesk. Both of their fathers were Farmers. Although she is listed as Wilkinson on the marriage certificate other documents we have old copies of have her listed as McQuilkin. One of these documents being her son Thomas baptism records from Armoy Catholic Church.  This is where the Margaret McQuilkin is found as well.

Both Alexander and Catherine are buried in Armoy.

In the 1901 Census I found the family here:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Armoy/Breen/920893/

and in 1911 Census I found the family here:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Armoy/Breen/112192/

Other information we are certain about because we are in contact with family found through letters we found in old files.

Sons of Alexander and Catherine:
- John Cassley born 1884 married Jeannie Devlin and a slew of children. Many of these decedents still live in/near Ballycastle
- Thomas born 1886 married Mary O'Donnel in Scotland and immigrated to the US (my great grandfather)
- Alexander Cassley was born 1890 and never married
- James Cassley was born in 1892 and is buried in Derry, it is believed his wife last name was Mullan. Family is interested in finding out what happened to his children as his wife left with them.

I will be in Ireland for 5 weeks soon and would be interested in pursuing any leads/recommendations people might have as I am stuck at the moment.

I have too but with the different names and one census having her born in boston while the other puts her in ireland I just don't know where to look next.  I'd like to be able to figure out enough about her and Alexander to confidently move to the next generation back.  I'm just not what all sources I should be looking into next.

Family Search is quite good for Massachusetts vital records for the period of Catherine's birth but this is, at present, only a possibility (based on name- Catherine, father- John, born c1863 Boston)-
Catharine Wilkinson , born June 1861 Charlestown, Suffolk, Mass., parents- John Wilkinson & Margaret McElroy. Note: Charlestown is a section of Boston.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FHTG-VJY
A tree connected to one of those gives birthdate as 31 June 1861

The marriage (1857) of John Wilkinson (son of John & Ann) & Margaret McElroy (daughter of Owen & Mary) shows both born in Ireland-

Daughter Ann Jane born 1858-

Still all speculation but just gathering more possibilities for Catherine's parents being the John & Margaret above.

A Margaret Wilkinson died 1893- husband John, a farmer, informant-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1893/05988/4703096.pdf

Catherine's marriage (1883) lists her residence as Glenshesk- which is the correct area for Ardaghmore where Margaret died in 1883.

John Wilkinson (shepherd) & Margaret McIlroy had a daughter Sarah born Ardaghmore in 1868!
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1868/03432/2259605.pdf

Deliagh born 1871 at Ardaghmore (father's occupation 'herding')-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1871/03313/2214199.pdf

Sarah McQuilkin married 1891, a Bella McQuilkin one of the witnesses-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1891/10665/5886000.pdf

Birth of daughter Margaret (1892)-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1892/02350/1878286.pdf

Based on above marriage this is possibly John McQuilkin's death-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1918/05181/4430434.pdf

Which finds this family in 1911 census-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Glenmakeeran/Glenmakeeran/113005
and John with daughter Sarah in 1901-

Sarah McQuilkin's baptism (1868) squeezed in register- right side of page-
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633083#page/35/mode/1up

Dalia baptised 1871- Delia?
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633083#page/39/mode/1up

Isabella Wilkinson bapt. 6 May 1866 (again has been squeezed into register)- likely the Bella McQuilkin who was witness at Sarah's marriage in 1891-

If this is the same Isabella then aunt* was Ellen Devlin- remember that an Ellen Devlin was witness at Catherine's marriage in 1883!
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Armoy/Essan/920937

*more likely Isabella is niece of Ellen's father James Devlin.

This is great. I'm going to download these documents and talk with my family in Ireland and see if this jives with what they think.

A family tree in a marriage book that we have here in the states for my grandparents shows Catherine mom maiden name as McIlroy. So that makes what you found seem very probable.  Now to really make it look good I need to find the immigration records. And then work on Alexander.

Best to mention ALL the information you have as any clues might help identify the correct family. I would have found the above details much, much sooner if you'd mentioned that Catherine's mother might have been McIlroy. There's lots more on the family to be found online but I'll let you get on with searching.

I greatly appreciate your help and apologize the information was left out.  It had been filed outside of my confirmed stuff and I had forgotten about it until you came up with that link. I originally had misinterpreted the paper I have as saying McLeroy which is probably why I had filed it under unconfirmed.  Your links have helped a lot.
