Title: Hauptman
Post by: BeverleyCA on Friday 12 January 18 23:51 GMT (UK)
Looking for information about Franz Hauptman b. 1818 in Bohemia.  emigrated to Scotland , set up a glass factory with his brother Ignaz Hauptman in Edinburgh. Married Elizabeth Stevens in 1884 in Edinburgh. Had numerous children, one being Elizabeth Hauptman b.1866 in Bohemia. Elizabeth married Lewis McBeth Morrison in 1890 in Alloa, Clackmannan. Their son, John Morrison b.1890 was my father. I have never been able to find the death of Franz Hauptman , not in Scotland, England or Bohemia - have an idea he may have died around 1893, but not certain.
I was wondering if anyone on this site would have any knowledge that could help me.
Thank you.
Bev

Have you managed to find any information about the glass factory, trade directories or local newspapers to give any background information that might give a clue?

And a warm welcome to Rootschat from me.

Could be worth posting on this thread from 2007:

It doesn't answer your question, but the originator, Irene B, was last online less than a week ago and she might have more info.

All the best
Philip

ADDED - when is the last definite sighting you have of Franz (census, youngest child's birth etc).  This would narrow the search.

There is a will & testament entry for his brother in 1887. There may be mention there of brother if they were partners still?

Ignaz Hauptman - 25/6/1887

Glass Manufacturer, Merchant, and Engraver, Edinburgh, residing at 31 Cambridge Avenue, Pilrig there, d. 17/03/1887 at Edinburgh, testate

What is the last census in Scotland where you can find Franz?

Sure you have this just noting memorable address for 1881 for Franz and his family: Lover's Lane, Cottage in the Garden, St Andrew area of Edinburgh. He showed as a gardener at the time of this census. Maybe he and Ignaz no longer working together?

You have the 1890 marriage entry of your direct line daughter Elizabeth to Lewis McBeth? What did this day about her father? Or the 1891 marriage of her brother Francis to Margaret Sutherland also in Alloa?

Have you checked the original image of the 1891 census with Franz's wife Elizabeth living with her son Francis in Alloa to see what it showed for her marital status - married or widowed?

Article in The Scotsman newspaper 8 Sept 1887 refers to bankruptcy of Messrs E and E Albert and F E Hauptman of Albert Street Edinburgh ,also of Wharf Road, Notting Hill, Flood Street, Chelsea and elsewhere trading as "Hauptman, Albert & Co". The bankrupt Hauptman filed his own petition, the two Alberts having absconded...It appeared that Hauptman and the two Alberts joined Mr Ignay Hauptman in partnership in Edinburgh in 1883...they each brought £50 into the business.

Further article 28 September refers to proceedings in the London Bankruptcy Court "... in January of this year,on the expiry of the lease of their premises they removed to London ....because they thought that city would be better for the conduct of their business than Edinburgh". The article again shows that Mr Hauptman, but not his partners, was in attendance.

William, with your lead on the London Gazette, there are a number of notices for the Hauptmans over more that 20 yrs.

Bev, this is the link for you to search www.thegazette.co.uk  Just add the surname hauptman in the search box on the left to see results.

Sadly, I cannot see anything to help you with Franz's death details so far... :-\ Hopefully someone will be able to find something.

A transcription of the 1881 census shows Bethia, Elizabeth, Wilhemina, Annie and Theresia as adopted daughters.

Wilhemina (Neil) died 1954 and is buried in Rosebank Cemetry in Edinburgh along with brother Francis Hauptman d 1941. (Rosebank Cemetry is in the Pilrig area of Edinburgh, not far from where the factory would have been).

Looking at your link to the London Gazette, Monica it may have been the above named Francis (ie the son of Franz) who went bankrupt - all the 1887 notices seem to refer to Francis not Franz - newspaper articles referred to previously only give initials, F E.

Elizabeth is showing as married in the 1891 census but as a widow in 1901. To narrow it down further the 1895 valuation roll would appear to show her as a widow in Alloa.

Thank you Millmoor
I have most of that information - Franz and his brother Ignaz set up the business or maybe Ignaz set it up and Franz joined him. Franz was on the 1861 census of Edinburgh, not on the 1871 as he had gone back to Wolfersdorf, Bohemia.  My g/mother was born there as well as two other children, then they came back to Edinburgh and are on the 1881 census. Alien Arrivals shows Ignaz arriving in Hull, England 15 Aug 1846 from Hamburg, Germany - Franz shown as arriving at London, 5 Nov,1847 from Germany. On 1891 marriage of one of his daughters he is shown as glass works manager, on another daughter's marriage in 1893 he is shown as glass merchant - deceased. If these dates are corrrect then we could assume he died between 1891 and 1893
Thanks again for welcoming me:)

Who asked me about Bethia Hauptman ?  She was an adopted child - she died in1885 at age 19 from peritonitis - signed by Elizabeth Hauptman - foster mother, so guess she wasn't adopted

Also some one mentioned about some of the children being adopted - actually they were the ones born in Bohemia - my g/mother one of them and I have the birth certificates from Bohemia

Bev

So far I haven't figured out to reply to each individual person who has answered me - sorry about that

This is confusing since Ignatz Hauptman died on 17 Mar 1887 and his estate was probated in June 1887 leaving everything to his wife

Just to say that there are quite  a few notices about the bankruptcy in the newspaper archive if you search the name Hauptman in the year 1887.

The Alberts did not abscond until 2nd July 1887 - this is after the confirmation of Ignatz's will.

The Scotsman does have this ad 29 June 1887 " Premises,Shrub Vale, Leith Walk, lately occupied by Messrs Hauptman, Albert & Co: entry immediate". And this from 14 May "Boiler, tubular, 12 ft long, 1/2 ft diameter; also 6 H-P engine, perfect order. Hauptman, Albert and Co., Leith Walk.

Thank you Millmoor
I know about the bankruptcy - my search is trying to find out if anyone knows exactly when and where Franz Hauptman died.  He just seems to have disappeared -maybe went back again to Bohemia but I have a friend in Germany who tried checking with no results. Maybe it will have to remain one of those unsolved mysteries.
Thanks again for your post
