Hi all,
I'm struggling to trace some of my Irish Ancestry as I'm stuck at some of my great grandparents. I know there is a slim chance of being able to trace them because of loss of some records and poor record keeping but this is worth a try anyway.
Basically, my paternal grandmother was born in County Longford, in a township called Creenagh, in 1924. She was named Muriel Violet Wright. Her parents were William Wright and Sarah Jane Twaddle. William was born in Co. Longford too, in 1871 to Robert Wright and Margaret Leslie. Sarah was born in Longford too (I think) in 1892 to John Twaddle and Margaret McCord. But beyond that, I'm stuck as there is not much information to go on.
Is there any other sites that specialise in irish genealogy that I can use to help or any other ways of finding info?
Thanks,
Fiona

Hi Fiona,
There is the census for 1901 and 1911
Here is Sarah Jane in 1901
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lcp/
Irish Genealogy has civil records - you can check which ones are available. https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

1911 census shows how long a couple were married. With that information you can search Irish Genealogy for the marriage which will give you the couple’s parents.
You might be able to get back a bit further.
-
The index on www.irishgenealogy.ie shows a marriage in 1855 in Longford between Robert Wright and Margaret Leslie. Unfortunately they haven't got the original scan of this on the site yet, but they are working towards having all the records scanned. i think you should be able to view it on GRONI for a small fee. Charles Twaddle and Margaret McCord married in 1889 and their certificate is free to view at irishgenealogy.ie. John's father was Charles Twaddle, Farmer and Margaret's father was John McCord, Farmer.

GRONI? Sorry, not sure what that acronym stands for?
I found Charles Twaddle and John McCord too but I'm stuck as to for the mothers' names. There were no records of a birth registered for Margaret McCord so I'm unsure if I'm searching in the right county/religion. As far as I am aware, no member of my irish family were catholics but I may be wrong.
-
Civil registration began in 1864 for births and Margaret was born before this.
There are Catholic baptisms online but your family show Church of Ireland.

There is a marriage for Mary McCord to Moffat McCormick and she is also from Cordiven

The 1855 marriage of Robert Wright to Margaret Leslie will not be found on GRONI's website (as was suggested earlier) as they only hold certificates from Northern Ireland counties. However, extract is, and has been available for years, on Family Search-

Hi All,
Sorry I didn't reply asap.
Your help has been tremendous as I've managed to uncover some family members. If it wasn't for your advice and a gentle nudge of direction, I would have been stuck.
It's a shame that Irish ancestry can be difficult as there is so much history in Ireland and it would have been amazing for everyone to find out what part their ancestors played in Irish's history.
Thank you again.

Hello I am trying to trace descendants of the Wright family from Creenagh.
My Great Grandmother was an Ann Wright born circa 1862 into a farming family in Creenagh.
Ann had at least two siblings, a sister Emily and also brother William who married a Sarah Twaddle. I believe that William and Sarah had four children Leslie, Griffith, Charlotte and another daughter. From the scant else I know Charlotte may possibly have married a Pembrokeshire farmer and moved to West Wales.
Hoping that I can find out more as the William and Sarah mentioned in this thread it would seem are directly related to my Great Grandmother Ann Wright.
Many thanks,
MarthaA

Thanks so much KG, that’s so helpful, I didn’t know her parents’ names but presume then that this would make her mother and father the Robert Wright and Margaret Leslie mentioned in the thread that were married in 1855 - which would make sense as she was born in 1862.

Hi Martha, welcome.
I'm the original poster of this thread and I am one of the descendants of the Wright Family from Creenagh. My great grandparents were William Wright and Sarah Jane Twaddle. One of their children- Muriel was my paternal grandmother who was born in 1924 and passed away in 2011. When I started the research on my Irish family tree, I made a connection with a long lost relative who was descended directly from Ann Wright and John Murtagh.
If you wish, I can help with more of these information and potentially link you to more long lost descendants?! Please private message me and I will see what I can do to help you.

Thanks for that. Although MarthaA may have got her family tree a bit mixed up. She mentioned that William and Sarah (my great grandparents) had 4 children called Leslie, Griffith, Charlotte and another daughter. This is not wholly true. I will explain.
William and Sarah had 6 children- Robert, Margaret, John, Muriel, William, Leslie between 1919 and 1930.
HOWEVER, William had a paternal uncle, also called William Wright, who married a woman called Letitia Griffiths and they had 5 children together. One of their sons- Robert Wright (born 1883) had married a Charlotte McDowell and they had 4 children- Beatrice, Olive, Charlotte and Arthur.
I’m guessing that it must be from this particular branch that she got her information from. It’s certainly plausible that Robert and Charlotte would have another child called Griffith, named after Letitia Griffiths.
@MarthaA I would like to know where you got your original information from? It may help us to figure out whereabouts in the family tree you fit in.

Many thanks again, it would seem then that by 1911 Letitia was a widow and residing also in Gorteenorna with her 28 year old son who was recorded as being a Farmer. Presumably the Wrights would have known the McDowells as it seems to be a small local population and perhaps Robert and Charlotte’s daughter also a Charlotte may be the family member I have been told of.
