Title: Thomas Faulkner, emigrated from Ireland 1910
Post by: Curley on Tuesday 23 January 18 13:08 GMT (UK)
Hi All
Thomas Faulkner, emigrated to Philidelphia from Ireland via Liverpool on the SS Merion, arriving 23 May 1910.Date of birth is listed as 1887,but true date of birth is 25 Oct 1882.
According to ships log he was met by James Compton of Philadelphia.
I would like to trace him and family ,possibly in Philadelphia, but so far I have tried census records, military records and marriage records, with no success.
Last confirmation in Ireland of Thomas is in his father William,s will in 1915 where he was left an amount of money, and living in Philadelphia.
Any help towards finding my Thomas would be much appreciated.

Thanks Curley

The ship manifesto shows Thomas FAULKNER from Claggan, Cookstown & Father William

William FAULKNER and Elizabeth McCORMICK had a son Thomas on Mar 01 1882 LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1882/02798/2026773.pdf) #216

They had a second Thomas on Oct 25 1884 LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1884/02673/1984798.pdf) #474
Presumably the first Thomas died although I don't immediately see a death record

Parents William FAULKNER m Eliza McCORMICK on May 31 1871 in Cookstown

There is a Thomas FAULKNER on Philadelphia records who consistently gives his DoB as May 08 1887 and place of birth Cookstown
He is listed on the 1910 census with brother in law and his sister; Philip & Nora CORCORAN aged 24
He is listed on the 1920 census as 32 and that he immigrated in 1910 when he would have been 23
He married Margaret EWING in 1914 in Philadelphia
He had two living children in 1920 and was a fireman in a spinning mill
In 1942 he was living at 7719 Walker Street as on WW2 record
and he died on Sep 12 1948 LINK (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/158577525) to gravestone

He ties in with the immigration record only I cannot find a birth record for this date (May 08 1887)

If you have definitive evidence for the birth of Thomas as stated, then I am not convinced these Thomas' are the same person but I'd note the details if you do not sure to come back to.

There are markings on the 1910 passenger list that indicate this Thomas became naturalized and his arrival was verified on 29 Apr. 1939.  You can see what the markings mean here - https://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/manifests/occ/  The district number indicates that the naturalization office used covered Philadelphia.

On a naturalization index, there is a Thomas Faulkner residing at 7719 Walker Street, the same address of the WWII draft registration card noted above.  It says he was age 55, date of order of admission and date certificate issued 26 Feb. 1943, certificate issued by US District Court of Philadelphia, petition number 165563.

Hi All
Many thanks for all your efforts.
From all the info you all have produced I think we have mostly found my man.
The ship manifesto for 1910 is definite ,and obviously the naturalization details are correct.and death details plus headstone look good.
The census for 1910 is not my man as he didn't arrive until later in year.
1920 census looks correct,but I cannot find a census record for 1930 or 1940
Date of birth is always going to be a problem,so I think I have to accept that the one used in US was an educated guess.
Will keep looking .In the meantime thanks again for all your help

The census for 1910 is not my man as he didn't arrive until later in year.

Technically, the date that the census takers were asking about in 1910 was 15 April 1910.  However, looking at the image of the possible match for your guy, that sheet does not list when the census-taking was done.  Other images from that group have April in the earlier sheets and 9 May with the 9 crossed out towards the end.  So, he should have arrived too late to appear in the census, but I wouldn't rule out that the census taker or the person giving the information misunderstood the instructions or did not know when he arrived, so they included him.

Curley - if you look for this man's marriage record you could confirm what name is given for his father and possibly both parents for confirmation

The reason there is no death for Thomas 1882 is he is more likely to be Alex who was born around same time but not registered as Alex
