Title: MI lookup Dumfries
Post by: cupasoop on Wednesday 24 January 18 14:25 GMT (UK)
Does anyone have access to the MIs for Dumfries cemeteries? I'm looking for the gravestone inscription (if he had one) for Thomas Mills, died 27 July 1895 in 18 St Michael St, Dumfries. Don't know what cemetery he would be in. Hoping it may have a note of his parent's names. No parents noted on his death certificate but a previous marriage certificate has them as James Mills and Elizabeth (Betty) Turnbull, although I'm getting hints that his name may be slightly different to his fathers. His dad could be a Mil or Miln or Milne. He was born in Ancrum, Roxburghshire anytime between 1825 and 1830 depending on what census you look at but I can't find a birth certificate for him. Hoping to find another piece of the puzzle.

That’s him, general dealer then pig dealer. Cheers Matt, 6 for the price of one.  I think a Dumfries visit is on the cards. Is there any maps online that show the layout of the cemetery?

No online maps of the cemetery that I'm aware of. May be worth contacting Dumfries council office to see if they can help.
For info these are the other 3 Mills.....Section N.  No 14.

Hi....I've got a printed map of st Michael's but it's mainly the Roman numeral sections. At the very bottom of my map there is a section L and section M. I can only assume that section N is further down, almost at the bottom gate...rather than the Craig's Road end.

Brilliant stuff all. Not sure where the bottom gate is Pete but I can see where Craig’s road is so not in that direction I’d guess. I’ll contact the council cemetery people and ask if they can narrow it down for me.

Thank you

Hi PeteRae,
Am interested in the map you have. Is it possible to purchase one or obtain a copy.
I was at the cemetery in late september but heavy rain stopped search. Am returning in
June (hoping rain will have stopped by then) to continue.
Rgds Matt.

Hi Matt....PM me your email address and I'll scan the map....think it's in four pieces anyway. Won't be able to do it till next week as it's in my workshop at Annan. Pete.

Well, our company has an office in Castle Douglas and I got a call last night to go see them and sort their problems out first thing this morning. Of course, having not contacted anyone regarding where section N was, I decided to rush the castle Douglas job and take a long lunch break wandering around St Michaels graveyard. I somehow thought graves may have been sorted in chronological order. They're not. An hour and a half I spent wandering around in there before deciding to give up and visit another day when I was properly prepared. Just about to head out the gates and I met who I assume was one of the church elders or officers. He didn't know where section N was but he took me inside the church to check their paperwork. Unfortunately, they only have books that go up to about 1880, and my first burial is 1895 but he did suggest the later burials were in the bottom half of the graveyard, so off I headed again for another 20 minutes of wandering and squinting at well, weathered sandstone. Decided to call it a day, as my parking ticket was just about to run out without finding what I had gone there looking for but I did find the grave of my 5th great uncle and his wife, and the grave of my gt gt grandfathers brother, his wife and 2 infant (9 and 23 months) children all of whom I didn't know were in there. A semi-successful visit I'd reckon. Time to go e-mail the council and Ewart library to see if they know where section N is.

There's a popular saying in Genealogy circles - "They won't be found until they're ready to be found" !

Looks like the time has come around!! well done  ;D ;D
