I wonder if a kind Rootschatter can date this photo?
I'm trying to figure out which of four daughters these two girls may be, so it will hinge on the girls' clothes, if that is possible.
I'm pretty sure this is outside 3 St Johns View, Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

Sorry, Steve, above my pay scale to have a guess at this one ;D, but if you amend the title by prefacing it with "DATE PLEASE for..." it should catch the eye of the experts.
Cheers,
Peter
-
Agree with changing the title!
My guess is around the 1910- 20. Not too definite, but is how it 'feels' to me.
Wiggy. :)
-
Thanks for the guidance - I've changed the title
-
My guess would be 1911 give or take a year.

Hi Steve...I gave it a clean for you...lovely natural photo.
Carol
-
...and a cropped version to focus on the subjects.
Carol
-
Thank you Carol,
I've been out all day, and that was a lovely present to come home to.
And thanks for the date.
I do have another photo of Elizabeth Barlow (?) which is pure sepia! Perhaps I should let the experts loose on that one, but I'll wait to see if I get some more dates for this one first.
-
It's Bert's Mum of the postcard :D
I'd go a little earlier than Carol but not much - 1908-1911 :-\
I have 3 daughters for her - 1904, 1906 and 1907 (ish). When was the other one born?
Gadget
-
Yes Gadget, and it's the same address ;D

I said yesterday that I couldn't understand how people see the father's chin in a baby, and likewise I am useless at guessing a child's age !
I thought folk would date using the dresses. Stupidly, I didn't think it would be help to list the birthdates - sorry about that.
Winifred born Q3 1898, BURIED Nov 1906
Gladys 21 July 1903
Dorothy 2 Sep 1905
Lily Q2 1907

Carol's good at estimating children's ages. I'd say they look about 5 and 6 or 7.
Is there anything at all on the back of the photo?
Gadget
-
I think they look to be about 6 & 7
Carol
-
This is the back of the photo. No clues there?
From comments so far, I assume we can say Winifred (died 1906) is not in the picture.
Can we rule out that it’s Gladys and Lilian together, because of the four year age difference between them?
If I’ve worked this out correctly (please say if I’m wrong!)
1910 = Dorothy aged 5, Gladys aged 7
1911 = Dorothy 6, Gladys 8
1912 = Lilian 5, Dorothy 7
1913 = Lilian 6, Dorothy 8
Are those daffodils in the tub in the bottom right corner? No one is particularly wrapped up, although the sun is weak (no shadows) so is this late Spring?
-
There is a clue to the back you know - the division down the centre didn't start until 1904, in UK, and the place for the stamp was later I think, but can't remember when.
Carol will know!
Wiggy.
-
Wiggy - well I never, I'm learning with every topic! Is that "M16" or "M46" in the stamp box, if that's another clue?

The divided back postcard was introduced in the UK in 1902 Wiggy.

I'm learning too!! ;D ;D
The site I looked up said 1904 so I just quoted - it said 1907 in US so I presumed 1904 was UK - sorry. :-[.
But what about stamp boxes, Carol? :). I tried to find that out too but couldn't get the required of! ;)
-
Elizabeth would be 40 in 1907 and I think she might be around that age.
It's very difficult with the girls fairly evenly space. I know that shoes were being introduced rather than boots by the late noughties.
-
I've decided to go for 1909-10 and Dorothy and Gladys.
None of my books have much on children and what they show are indoor, formal shots or included in groups. Here's a link to a page on one site that I occasionally look at :

Gadget - I was just typing this as you posted !
If the photo is March 1907, then the girls would be:
Dorothy aged 1 year 6 months and Gladys 3 years and 8 months
How about these two in March 1909 or 1910?
-
4 and 6 or 5 and 7 and Dorothy and Gladys for me. Lillian would be too old and Winifred has already died.
It could be April - late flowering daffodils ;D

Me too.

Many thanks everyone :D- especially Carol and Gadget

I agree with Gadget that children are hard to date....clothes were often passed down and altered...the younger child looks to have a dress that is a little bit big for her and has been taken up...the other child's dress looks a little on the small size if you look at the sleeves...but on balance, I think they are most likely to be Dorothy and Gladys.
I love it...it reminds me of Frank Sutcliffe's street photography.

In the 1950s, my Mum used to buy me clothes that were a size to big, so that I could grow into them. My sister was 7 years older than me so I didn't have hand me downs. We did share clothes in the 1960s though!
I have some of the Sutcliffe books - wonderful images. :)
* shoes had to be Startrite - Clarks and measure via those funny X-ray machines ;)
-
As the photo is backed by a postcard, does this mean it was taken by a commercial photographer who went around the streets looking for people to hand over a few bob for a likeness?
-
More than likely...natural photos of every day life taken on the spare of the moment...that's what adds to the charm :D
