Title: Benson family arriving from Scotland to Australia 1883
Post by: janjim on Saturday 27 January 18 00:09 GMT (UK)
Hi,
Wondering if anyone could assist me please.  Our family James & Isabella Benson arrived at Cooktown 3.10.1883 with their children on board the " S.S. Warrego", and subsequently disembarked at Brisbane.   James & Isabella Benson sailed from Glasgow, James b. 15.11.1826 Glencourse, Edinburgh, Scotland Isabella b.15.12.1837 Echo Bank, Liberton, Edinburgh.
Enquiring as to how they then got to Sydney, looking for any shipping records, and also a son John Thomson Benson b. 6.10.1862 Glencourse, Edinburgh Scotland. was never found after arriving in Brisbane.    We do not know if he continued on with the family to Sydney, as he has not been found in census, or Sands Directory records after arriving in Australia.
Would appreciate any assistance.
Regards
Jan

I doubt that you will find passenger lists for coastal shipping.

When do you see this family in NSW........earliest evidence?

Death certificates for James BENSON and Isabella BENSON......how are their children listed?

Passenger list 5.9.1883, SS Warrego, goes Benson James 46, Isabella 45, James 11, Robert 6, Davida 4, John 20, James 19, William 18 and Elizabeth 13.  Passengers disembarked at Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton and Brisbane with no dates disembarkations.   They were listed as "free"

Family were living at 80 Crown Road, Pyrmont Sydney in 1891 (changed to Bulwara Road) - James Benson in Sands Directory.   He died 1st April, 1892.   Isabella died 26.9.1892.

Listed on death certificate for James death, living were Isabella 30 years, James 27 yrs, William 24 yrs, Elizabeth 22 yrs, Agnes 20 yrs, Robert 15 yrs, Devina 13 -    3 males and 1 female deceased.
The female died in Scotland, 1 male child died in Scotland, 2 others unaccounted for would be John Thomson Benson and an older brother Francis, who most likely died in Scotland

Thank you Matthew, so John Thomson arrived in Brisbane, and that is where it ends.
Sometime between 1883 and 1891, the family moved to Sydney.

The death certificate for James BENSON, 1891, would ask for years in the colony........how is that information given.

Who is the informant, where is James buried. Who is daughter Isabella, 30 years, at 1892.

Is she in Australia?.

On death certificate for Isabella, d. Sep 1892........do the details for issue match with that of James, died April 1892?

Okay, sorry yes they had been in NSW for 9 years,so they must have come to Sydney straight away, and his wife Isabella was his informant, buried at Presbyterian Cemetery, Rookwood, Isabella at 30 years is married to Sass living in Australia still.  Isabella's certificate 10 years in NSW, bit out, and it shows 2 males deceased only.    Possibly it was not known whether John Benson was alive or not by this time.  Informant was the son James Benson.

Can you be specific about the information on death certificate for Isabella BENSON, 1892.

Exactly what is listed for "issue", and who is the informant.

Hi Jan,
I have the following information about James and Isabella Benson.
After arriving in Brisbane on 29/10/1883 on the Warrego, it appears that the family headed to Sydney as follows:
16/11/1883 - The Ly-ee Moon steamship arrives in Sydney from Brisbane. Listed on the passenger list are Jas Benson, Jas Benson (Jnr), Jn Benson. Presumably James senior, and his sons James Jnr and John.
On 21/11/1883, the Ranelagh arrives in Sydney from Brisbane with W. Benson, which could possibly be another son, William.
On 29/11/1883, the Corea leaves Brisbane, arriving in Sydney on 30/11/1883. It lists a Mrs Benson and 5 children on board (4 of the children would be Eliza/Elizabeth, Agnes, Robert and Davida/Divina. The 5th could be William, if it wasn't him on the 21/10, or could be another child?? William would have been 18, so he is unlikely to be listed as a child).
After they arrive in Sydney, I have no trace of them until 1889, when their daughter Agnes married William McFarland.
I hope that helps,
Suzanne
