Title: Looking for Thomas Edmonds originally from Ireland
Post by: Samantha Mattinson on Monday 29 January 18 14:46 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am trying to find information on Thomas Edmonds, I do already have a lot of information on him but i am trying to link him to his parents........

He was born on 12.02.1861 in Kilnaughtin, County Kerry, Ireland and died 22.02.1954 in Exmouth, Devon, England, United Kingdom
He joined the Royal Navy on 29 Jul 1877 on the ship Impregnable and was discharged on 12 Feb 1911, where he became a Coast Guard in Devon England. (I have his ships papers.)
He married Emily Batten and had two sons Samuel & Charles

As you can see i have nothing pre 1877 except that his father is called James and was a chief Boatsman
I have a potential link with a James Edmonds a Coast Guard/Chief Boatman in Kilnaughtin, County Kerry who married Ellen Carline and had 5 children 4 boys (Samuel Charles, ?, George & William) and 1 girl (Anne). Cant find out who the ? son is (potentially my Thomas?).

I would appreciate any information on any of the above individuals.

Regards
Sam

If they were Catholic then you can see what church registers might be online or survive elsewhere-

On the very strong possibility that the James you found is in fact Thomas' father, then I can add a little further information. James has a service record available (ADM 29/77/155), based on this he was born circ. 1812 and during the Crimean War was one of those CGs who served with the Fleet on HMS Boscawen and HMS Ajax, being awarded the Baltic Medal. I have researched all these CGs and can advise you that he gave his place of birth as Norfolk; this information was taken from the Ships Description Book.

Doing a check of the 1841 census I believe have found him at home with his parents Joseph & Ann in Caistor, near Yarmouth where he gives his occupation as Navy.

If you have access to FindMyPast it would be worth looking to see if a Merchant Seamen's Ticket was issued to James. These can sometimes be a mine of information, but no family details I'm afraid.
