This query will no doubt sound really stupid to those of you with more than one technical brain cell -- but I am bereft of technical know how and would really appreciate some advice please.
I am using Windows 10 and keep receiving a sign on my screen saying 'Welcome to your New Office' and inviting me to download this. I already have Microsoft Office and I am wondering what this 'New Office' is.
Is anyone else receiving this message and if so -- have you proceeded to download it please? What happens to your existing Microsoft Office?

Have you recently installed W10 or bought a new pc ?
It sounds like MS trying to get you to download their latest version of Office on a free trial basis.
It may also be a pop-up that's crept onto your pc from another source.
Have you done a malware scan ?

It's wise to check for malware but the majority of new computers running W10 have a link to Office 365 preinstalled which you gives you a trial period for the software before you are required to subscribe (Office 365 is a monthly subscription service and is the "newer" version of Office)

My computer with Windows 10 is now about 18 months old. This 'Welcome to your New Office' sign has been appearing, often on start up -- for some time.
It gives me the option to proceed or click 'Maybe later'. There is no option to completely refuse it!
It looks bona fide -- but what I'm concerned about is my existing Office and all my documents, pictures etc. and whether they would be compromised in any way.
However I certainly don't want to pay a monthly subscription. If I were to get an updated version of my existing Office, I would rather purchase by a one off payment.
It looks like I might be stuck with this regular sign popping up!

You should be able to turn it off ....
1. look for "Settings" on your computer (Its icon is a cog wheel)
2. click on System
3 click on Notifications & Actions
4 Scroll down and switch off any applications that you do not want notifications for
5 close the window

I found Settings as you suggested --- but under 'Notifications' -- I have just clicked 'off' for the option which says 'receive notifications from other apps....'.
I hope that is correct. It must be great to actually know what you are doing like you!!

My wife finds that hilarious - I tend to learn by making mistakes or fiddling around with settings to see what they do - the trick is remembering how to get back.

I used to get that notice when I first got my new laptop but managed to get rid of it, it returned after a recent up date, I'm trying to remember how I got rid of it again.
I know I googled quite a bit about it.
It's not coming to me...
Let us know if turning off the notifications works if not I'll try to remember......

I will definitely report back if it continues after stopping ALL notifications about Apps (I think!).

In the Notifications section you may have to scroll down the page to find the actual culprit but some users have reported that they also had to turn off notifications for Skype as well as Office 365.

When I tried to turn it off in Notifications I couldn't find it and I didn't want to turn all Notifications off so I uninstalled the app instead, the problem with doing that is it can be installed again by an update which is I assume why I got it again, I'll just do the same again if it comes back.

Unfortunately with all major upgrades to the W10 core many of the system settings are often restored to Microsoft settings and then have to be reset to User preferences.

Just letting you know, as promised - that switching off 'Notifications' - has NOT stopped the 'Welcome to your New Office' invitation appearing.

By switching "off" the general "Get notifications from Apps and other senders" you may have actually locked the Office App in the ON position.
Switch the "get notifications" back ON
scroll down the list to find Get Office and switch that off (and any others you don't want)
If Get Office is not listed here you may have to search your computer for the App and delete it from there

Click the Windows icon and it brings up a list starting with Most used, down a bit should be the letter A.
Click on the A and you get the alphabet, click on G and Get Office should be on the list that comes up, right click Get Office and uninstall should be one of the choices.

As Sinann says the easiest way now is to find and delete the "Get Office App" completely - it should be listed under G in your list of Apps rather than O for Office once found right click on it and choose uninstall.

Thank you to both of you -- I don't appear to have the same set up on my computer - however I have found an 'App Explorer' which I had never 'explored' before!
This has an 'Open Office' App -- but when left clicked I am simply invited to install it -- no option to delete it.
So if you are ever passing through Lancashire..............!

I feel like a baby!!
OK -- when I select the Windows Icon amongst the many options listed now are Microsoft Office and Microsoft Word 2010.
If I click on them I am taken to my Control Panel - Programmes and Features.
Listed are;
Microsoft Office (312MB) (Clicking it invites me to install)
Microsoft Office Professional 2010 (only 21.7MB) (I am assuming this is my existing Microsoft Office).
If I then left click the Microsoft Office -- I do get the option to uninstall -- so maybe that is what I should do. - Have I eventually -- after all your tutoring - reached the correct place!
Think that calls for a celebratory drink for all of you. I am so sorry to have been such a thicko and am really grateful to you all for your unending patience.

I haven't done it yet -- mainly because I was a bit scared of doing the wrong thing. Good job you mentioned that Sinann.
I cannot see anything relating to 'Get Office'. If I do a search via the amazing 'Cortana' - it simply takes me to Web results. -- I am definitely leaving it now and will just put up with the regular pop ups and 'pop' them down!
This has been a useful exercise for me though, as I have visited previously darkened corners of my computer which have never seen the light of day before!!

My lay out is a little different because I put my task bar on the side.
Do you get a list as in the first image when you click on the windows icon.
If you do click on the A I marked with a red arrow
it should give you all the letters in the second image
Click on the G and see if Get Office is in the list that comes up

I have never noticed the 'A' before! When I click on that I do get the alphabetical option you mention (I'm learning something new every day!)
Under the letter G -- there is NO 'Get Office' though. Just 4 items;
Get Dropbox
Get Help
Google Chrome
Groove Music

That's me out of ideas so.
BTW you can bring up that alphabet by clicking on any of the letters in the list not just the A.
Very handy way to find apps (as long as you know the correct name).

Since you drew my attention to that section, I've been playing with it --- and discovered that I can move the list downwards. That wasn't immediately obvious as the foot of it is 'hidden' by the largish 'Type here to Search' square. As a result I only had A, and the start of B -- on view.
Have you ever thought of charging for 'Computer Lessons for Dummies'!

As the "Get Office App is not appearing we need to start looking for other culprits ...
In the Notifications make sure that the "Windows Experience" notification and the tips and tricks notifications are set to off (as in image 1). Also check that notifications from Windows store are also set to off. (scroll down from the first two)
secondly check that notications haven't been building up in the "action center" by clearing it out - in the far right of your task bar (if its on the bottom) you should see an icon as in image 2 - left click on this to open it and any notifications in there that you don't want to keep ou should bin by clicking on "X" in top left corner of each of them.

I don't even know how the screen shots are being done - but really do appreciate it so much.

Pennines - i can do the screenshots, very useful for all sorts of things (inc family history!). There are a few ways but an easy one is the ‘snipping tool’ - it’s under ‘windows accessories’ (in the W section!). Have a look 😀

Deirdre I actually CAN snip (I am so proud!).
I learnt to snip from someone else on Roots Chat funnily enough, when talking about Newspaper articles.
All I do though is start to write 'snipping' into the Cortana thing -- and up it pops. Very useful indeed - why didn't I think of it for the screen shot though? Thank you for that.

You can save it to the task bar on the bottom of the screen if you use it regularly 😀

1 useful tip, is to always search on the internet for the words that appear in any sort of error message. You will invariably find out lots of other people who have had the same error message.

I have now copied your Notification screen and turned everything to 'off' except the first item listed. Thank you -- (I had noticed that you only had the first item in the 'on' position.
Deirdre and Mart 'n' Al (are there 2 of you!) --- thank you both for your additional suggestions.

If you buy plain Windows 10, it comes with a "Get Office" to let you download the current version (and get you hooked).
If you buy a PC with Windows ready installed, the maker is likely to have installed the current version already. MS push them to do this.
Either way, the 30-day trial starts as soon as you use it.
Because you have Office 2010, you can safely uninstall the other version.
There are two main places to do the uninstall from. Both should let you see the version so you know you are removing the correct one.
EITHER
Start Button - Settings (the Cogwheel) - Apps, then select the new one from the list on the right, and click on Uninstall.
OR
Control Panel (type it in the search box visible when you click the Start Button) - then Programs and Features (just like the old days!) - again, select the new one and click Uninstall.

Andrew --- when I find the 2 entries for Microsoft Office --- one simply says Microsoft Office, but it is a much larger version than the other --- Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. (That is 312 MB as opposed to 21.7 MB).
My 2010 version was transferred from my previous computer along with everything else - but the person doing that transfer for me, seems to have done it in separate sections - ie I have Microsoft Word separate from Microsoft Excel on my Desktop -- they don't say 'shortcut'.
Hallmark --- when I right click Microsoft Office in the programmes section I am simply asked 'Are you sure you want to uninstall Microsoft Office'?
Hence --- I am scared stiff of uninstalling it because of it's size in comparison to my existing programme.
I'm just going to leave it -- I'm still getting the invites to install the new office -- but closing them down.
Everyone has been so very helpful with this query -- I'm just a wimp - scared of doing something wrong - but I do really appreciate all your time and trouble.

That's good news then Hallmark. I must admit I've been into parts of my computer never previously visited ---- but most of which have completely baffled me.

I managed to locate the Background Apps, thank you -- no idea what most of them are. 'Get Office' was NOT listed -- but 'My Office' was there.
As I have my own version of Microsoft Office -- would it be safe to turn off 'My Office' do you think?
Maybe because that is 'on' - I keep getting the notifications welcoming me to 'New Office' and inviting a download.

Probably because they suspected more people would turn it off if it was too easy to find. (Seriously though, quite a few users are asking in the MS Forums why so many different apps run in the background especially when not authorised by the user)

Try it - if it causes any problems you can always switch it back on (it won't harm your computer)

So, I presume if you turn it off and use your own Office notifications would stop.
It was when I bought this PC I turned off a pile of these background Apps that I would never use. Plus it streamlines what's running and speedy everything else up!!

Hasn't changed any of mine. What I turned off are still Off
The updates did change Defaults e.g. my Defaults for photos were changed to Windows Defaults and i had to change them back.

No problem!
You should be able to Install what you have..... then Remove 365!
IF you have Office files on Computer you will lose them if you remove 365 IF you have no Office installed! So, install your version first!
IF you have no Office files on Computer then it doesn't matter what you do first.

My own 2010 version of Microsoft Office, which was transferred onto my new computer is working fine. So in my capacity as a 'dinosaur' - I will continue with that until a technical wizard is in my vicinity -- when can you make it!

I'm really sorry about this, but since our previous batch of correspondence - every time I go into my existing Microsoft Office 2010 - or a document, picture etc I am getting the sign below in the middle of my screen.
I have googled the wording and it seems other people have had the same problem in the past - but I couldn't see any solutions.
As I have had Microsoft Office 2010 for some years I no longer have the original packaging or the product key. (Lesson learnt!) I am being asked for the product key.
Is this simply a way of getting people to purchase a more recent version of Office do you think?
Also if I go ahead and purchase a new version, do you know what happens to my existing files, or can they be transferred over? I have LOADS!

Sadly installing your Office program on a new computer is treated as a new installation of the product and requires activation through Microsoft. Something you may not be able to do unless you find the product key.
If you would rather not update your version of Office there are free or lower cost alternatives
e.g. LibreOffice is free and will read and convert your MS Documents with ease

Falkyrn -- thank you so much for your speedy reply. I never gave a thought to a new computer treating my existing office as a new installation --- always keep your product key then.
Just one more question -- if I get a new office (I have seen Libre where I work as a volunteer and don't like it as much) -- will I be able to transfer all my existing files onto it do you think? That's probably a very basic question but I need to be able to access them and if Word is wanting me to have a product key - I don't want to get to the point where I am 'banned' from those records!

LibreOffice should work with your existing files without any hassle. You can save new documents in MS Office formats too, to allow you to pass them on to other people.

Libre will work with your existing documents with no problem. The layout is different from MS Office but investing a little time with it should resolve any issues.
If you still have access to your old computer and it’s working and hasn’t been wiped or reset to factory settings it should be possible to find your old product key within the system.

I think the product key is encrypted and held in the registry, so you would need 3rd party tool to retrieve it. Also it depends how many licenses you had and how many have been used. If you have retrieved the product key from the old pc, it may free up the license if you uninstall from the old machine, otherwise you have to ring up MS to explain the circumstances (ie not used on old pc anymore) to free up the license.

Thank you so much everyone -- I have had my new PC and been using it - for almost 12 months now and this problem has only just arisen!
I gave my old PC away - so unfortunately I have no chance of retrieving the product key. I really don't like Libre by comparison with Microsoft (I have used Libre now and again in my voluntary job).
I will buy an up to date MS Office --- and just hope everything will transfer over.
I really do appreciate all that everyone has done to try and help. (And I WILL keep my new product key safe!)

There are two main choices regarding Office now
MS Office - which is the stand alone version and
Office 365 - which is the subscription version (the price varies depending upon your choices but a personal version is available for £6 per month or £60 a year - direct from Microsoft)
The stand alone version has the advantage of no further payments once you've made that initial investment.
The subscription version has the advantage that it is always the latest version available and even if you stop the subscription the program acts as a viewer for your documents. The downside of course is that monthly subscription.

Oh dear - decisions are not my strong point! (Don't think I have any strong point actually).
I'll probably purchase one - I don't want it to keep getting updated. I'm just concerned about my existing records - but apparantly I have 28 days left now to sort it out.

I'm not sure what you mean here. It is not just freely sitting around to be found. As I said before the Office product Key is encrypted in the registry but you can extract it with 3rd party software. I have just done so with my Office 2010 just to see if was possible and successfully obtained it.

Also, if it was installed when bought the sticker was very often put on tower.

I had Office and it was always easy to find Product key for it... I think it was by going Change Product Key, which one would use if installing a clean Version on a Computer if other was corrupted.

What you are possibly remembering is the twenty character Product-Id, which you can see in the same place as the Change Product Key link that you mention. You use this to Activate Office. The Product Key is and always has been manually entered and encrypted in the registry and has never been visible and has only ever been extractable with 3rd party software.
