Hi All,
My grandfather was John Ashburner Kendal born in Dalton in Furness 29/4/1858. His father was Edward Ashburner born 1818 in Cartmel Lancashire. I visited St Michaels Churchyard in Rampside and photographed the headstone of Master Mariner Robert Ashburner (1852-1904).I have an ancestry 4th cousin match to a member of the Douglas family who is a descendant of this same Robert Ashburner through the Ashburner and Wedge families. What I would like to know is how to find the connection between my line and the Robert Ashburner line ?. I would greatly appreciate any assistance or advice, Thank you. Regards Gary Murphy

There is a baptism for a Robert Ashburner on 2 January 1853, birth year 1852. Parents are Robert and Jane and the baptism was at Ulverston, Lancs
Could this be your Robert?

There is an 1871 census showing Robert (1817) and Jane (1819) with children Thomas (1849) and Robert (1853).
Robert Snr is a retired sailmaker and Robert Jnr is an apprentice sailmaker.
Registration District is Ulverston
Piece No. 4244
Folio 52

Just clarifying your grandfather John - his birth record from the GRO
KENDALL, JOHN ASHBURNER -
GRO Reference: 1858 J Quarter in ULVERSTONE UNION Volume 08E Page 609
What I take to be his parents marriage but Hannah's surname mistranscribed
Marriages Jun 1858
Ashburner Edward Ulverstone 8e 746
Rendal Hannah Ulverstone 8e 746
So you are trying to find out if Robert Ashburner (1852) is related to Edward and his son John. That means going backwards in order to try and link the above.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look up these particulars, I think they are spot on. I will work backwards as you suggest - Could I please ask another question of you ? - In your experience how accurate do you think the prediction is for a fourth Cousin relationship ?, I am wondering If there could be an alternate relationship other than a fourth Cousin one. Thank you Regards

Oh my, I always get crossed-eyed working out relationships. I suggest that you Google 'ancestor relationship chart' and look at images of these charts.
Pick the one that you find easiest to follow and use that to work out the relationship. I'll give you a starter - try looking at this website:-
