Title: William BENNETT ca 1720
Post by: garlands on Wednesday 31 January 18 14:43 GMT (UK)
William BENNETT m Elizabeth DYER on 30 Sep 1747 in Stoke Damerel.

Presumably, William was born c1720 in, I assumed, somewhere in Devon, but an extensive search has found there is no sign of him there, so I am now looking for him in Cornwall. Unfortunately, there are over 60 baptismal records for that name in the county between 1700 and 1730. I think I've found the most likely one (in Saltash, 1722), but I'm worried that the one I need is from further afield, so I want to eliminate as many of the others as possible. Therefore, if anyone can lay claim to one of these William BENNETTs I should be most grateful to have details.

Thanks

Hi Fizzybubble,

Your question made me resume the hunt for the missing family, which I had abandoned some time ago because of a total lack of success. I've still not been able to find any siblings for Elizabeth in Stoke Damerel, but I have found 5 baptisms in near-by Wembury (ca 6 miles) with parents William & Elizabeth BENNETT, the whole sequence being:-

08 Nov 1747   Elizabeth in Wembury
17 Dec 1749   William       ditto
22 Mar 1752   Richard       ditto
27 Jul 1755   Rebecca        ditto
27 Oct 1756  Elizabeth in Stoke Damerel
05 Nov 1757  Susannah in Wembury

I'm now trying to confirm that these are all part of the same family.

Yes I found the Wembury But there was a William Bennett who married an Elizabeth in Wembury in 1744 so I thought that was their family.

Yes, I also found that marriage yesterday, and I think you're right. I also looked for BENNETT deaths around that time, in case William re-married, but that doesn't work, either. So, did the couple who married in Stoke Damerel have only one child in the whole of their married lives?

They may have had more but never took them to be baptised.

I thought baptism was a legal requirement in those days.
