Post by: Deskman on Friday 02 February 18 22:04 GMT (UK)
Any help with the xxxs and related text here is much appreciated.

"Davis drove me over to meet him, Costume riding suit. Brown leather boots tie of fearful & wonderful design & delightful little leather cap price one guinea, am always interested in Tubbs clothes. Mr Wood came soon after, Tubbs & I from a coin of vantage on the building watched to see the affect the pulling down would have on him. He"

The folks here are brightening my transcription from dark uncertainty to wonder. Thank you.

The bold text is thanks to help here.

JenB, Coin / coign of vantage is a wonderful revelation, quite new to me. I am deeply impressed. How did you resolve that?

sparrett, I think at first sight it is 'tasteful' but on further looking a now think it is 'fearful'. What do you think?

Thank you to you both.

Could it be tie of fearful & wonderful design?

Could it be tie of fearful & wonderful design?
Those were my thoughts too.

This guest of summer,
The temple-haunting martlet, does approve,
By his loved mansionry, that the heaven’s breath
Smells wooingly here. No jutty, frieze,
Buttress, nor coign of vantage, but this bird
Hath made his pendant bed and procreant cradle.
Where they most breed and haunt, I have observed,
The air is delicate.

Macbeth, Act 1 Scene 6

I just saw it straight away and googled the phrase, which confirmed my suspicions  :)

Thanks again JenB and thanks to horselydown86. That is now the fourth Macbeth quotation in the diary. Even when JenB shared it I failed to recognise it.  This forum is fun.

This forum is fun.

You can say that again!  :)
One of the most enjoyable forms of education I've ever encountered!  :D

Snowy regards from N. Germany,
