Michael Herman OLSEN was an engineer
trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/172425300
The tree on geni has him dying in 1896, before the two youngest children were born.
You have him as dying in 1922, after his wife remarried in NSW, though I can't see a divorce.
He is not the Herman OLSEN who died in 1916.

I am sure CoL has the right person here, but according to Qld births from 1867 children were born to William Callendar THOMSON ( under various spellings) and mother's name is consistently Jessie nee LAING (various spellings.)
There was a sister to Harriett named Ann. Perhaps this was the source of the confusion for the informant.

Hi,
The Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Monday 4th November 1907 on page 2 and 3 has an article about the opening up of the Taabinga and Cresselley land areas and the results of the Land Court allocations.
On Page 3 under CRESSELLEY, Taabinga Group is shows that W. PITT was successful in selecting portion 73 of 178 acres.

Thanks everyone that gives me heaps to work with.
Clarence dates 1925 - 2000 are right I have birth and death certificates.
Mekal Norman death 1968 is right found his death in 'find a grave' and worked is birth year out from that 1895.
Family story is they had a farm in Wagga Wagga.
Mekal Noman married Deas Isabel Vernon 1901 - 1984 in Wellington in 1922. The earliest I found him in NZ is 1919 in Auckland. They must have returned to Australia because Clarence is born there. They also had Gwendoline b 1923 d 1984
Daphne b 1926 d 1950
Cyril b 1930 - As far as I know still living
In his life he was a School teacher, Farmer, and at his death a wool classer
Mekal Herman have not been able to confirm anything on that man.

This would be much closer to a very likely birth date.
And almost tallies with 32 years in 1900 (from Gerry) describing the crew member of the correct initials and surname.

The earliest I found him in NZ is 1919 in Auckland.

Hi, Mekal Norman Olsen is my great-grandfather. The geni tree linked to earlier is mine but it's a work in progress, not meant to be gospel! I had the date for M.Herman Olsen incorrect but only there for a few days before I realised my mistake (2am and my brain mistaking insolvency for intestacie).
I am also incredibly stuck on Mekal Herman Olsen, can't find a death or burial anywhere. Just the rumour that he was Norwegian.
Mekal Norman, Deas, and Daphne are all buried alongside one another in Aramoho Cemetery in Whanganui.
-
Oh jeepers, I obviously linked this to my facebook not intending to ever use the forums, haha, excuse my profile picture!
-
Daphne Olsen was my mother and she died 18 December 1952 from polio. She was born in 1926 in a town called Hunterville where her father, (my "Granddad") worked for the NZ Railways.
She was Clarence's sister. She also had a sister Gwendoline and another brother Cyril.
Verification of Mekal Norman Olsen's death. The date is correct. I was at the funeral and 17 years old at the time. I remember like it was yesterday.
Rosalea is quite correct when she says that Mekal, Deas (Nanna Olsen) and Daphne are buried next to each other at the Aramoho Cemetery in Whanganui, NZ. I, too, have been to the grave site on more than one occasion.

Read reply#2 please.
More information available on NAA and you have the option to purchase an historical image of his marriage certificate [AUD$21.40] online from Qld BDM which should show his age, place of birth, occupation, parents' names including mother's maiden name.

Have just been revisiting this brick wall. Have confirmed the Michael Herman Olsen born in Norway is my ancestor via ancestryDNA, seems many distant cousins still live in Egersund. However, no joy finding his death or burial.
-
I have seen posts elsewhere where it is claimed that Mikel Herman Olsen drowned at sea. There is no date given or even a year. There is a suggestion it may have been 1922 which means he would have been 56 at the time; 1922 - 1866 = 56
Being a sailor or merchant seaman he may have been on a ship that sank and all hands lost.
Consequently there would be no captains log to verify this but there must be some records somewhere specifying crew members who sailed on various ships and a list of the ships that were lost with all crew perishing.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find such information?
I am very interested to find the demise of my great grandfather.
Thank you to anyone who can help.

I've been through all the records of shipwrecks around Australia from 1910 to 1930 and Mekal Herman Olsen is not listed as missing or died at sea. There were a couple of wrecks where the missing person was not named but there were other survivors including the captain so ruled those out as well.
So what happened to him?
There are living descendants in Australia who may know the answer but don't know how to get hold of them. The NZ descendants don't know.
Cheers
