Title: 1889 diary p32 'rabid'
Post by: Deskman on Monday 05 February 18 13:36 GMT (UK)
Any help with the xxx and text and related text here is much appreciated.

"subject of church service & the C.ars  on which as Gordon says he is “rabid” – Says that he cant call Mr Bowkers action in stopping boys xxxxx at Belief anything less than “wicked”. Still likes & appreciates"

If what I read as 'C.ars' is Catholics I don't understand the abbreviation.

Folks here are brightening my transcription from dark uncertainty to wonder. Thank you.

Looks like...

'...stopping boys believing Cat Belief...'

Hope that helps!

Could it be "ars" as in "art"?

I can't read what comes after "stopping".  ???
I thought it was one word, with "p" as the 2nd or 3rd letter.
It looks as though he has corrected it in the middle...

If it is "boys xxx", could it perhaps be something like ...stopping boys bowing to belief...(?)

It looks like "boys strong Cat Belief" to me.

It looks like "boys strong Cat Belief" to me.

I see what you mean. Maybe that's an apostrophe between the 2 bits.

Thank you Erato, goldie61, Karen McDonald and Palladium

You have brought order and sense here. The Rev Bowker was too evangelical for the Anglican Church and resigned in May 1891. He was a member of the Trinitarian Bible Society (their slogan being 'Founded in 1831 for the circulation of Protestant or uncorrupted versions of the Word of God') so the  text here is not a surprise.

We now have this as my preferred version.

subject of church service & the Cats on which as Gordon says he is “rabid” – Says that he cant call Mr Bowkers action in stopping boys believing cat Belief anything less than “wicked”. Still likes & appreciates

Thank you.
