Title: Which regiment would these relatives be please
Post by: NeilnSue on Wednesday 14 February 18 15:33 GMT (UK)
I am hoping someone may be able to tell me which regiment my Grandad (sitting) and his brother were in please.  Henry Stephen and Frederick George Young.

hey are both artillerymen  Without seeing their shoulder titles clearly we cannot be 100% sure which of the three branches they belonged to.  Do you have their names?

Hi,  Henry Stephen Young (sitting) and Frederick George Young is the other, they were born in Ramsgate Kent.  Henry survives but Frederick doesn't.
My mum tells me that no-one even knew about Frederick as he was never mentioned when she was growing up, which is sad.

Henry Stephen Young most likely the one who was a [horses] Driver in the Royal Field Artillery.

Frederick George Young,  Gunner Royal Garrison Artillery died of wounds 2 July 1916. Just cross checking him, he left his effects to his sisterJane Reid - does that make sense?

Can I ask the  rude question - is it certain that these are both the men you name?  The man sitting has three overseas stripes which weren't authorised until December 1917 which is after Frederick George died so he isn't Frederick.  Could the man standing simply be a mate who over the years has been mistaken for Frederick?  He is wearing what looks like the ribbon of the 1914 or 1914/1915 Star which I don't think had been authorised for wear before July 1916.

Just to add a bit to what MaxD has said.
His 3 stripes indicate 3 years overseas service starting Aug. 1914. In addition the standing chap has a wound stripe. These were introduced in July 1916. So given any recovery time to when this was taken would be after Frederick died.
This just re-affirms what has already been said.
The pose does indicate a family member.
Just noticed he appears to have the MM ribbon.

Henry is definitely the man sitting down, but my mum and I have assumed that Frederick was the person standing.
I have found a Frederick George Young killed 30/3/1918 no G/21879 born Ramsgate and part of Royal Sussex Regiment.  Would this fit the information you have given. Also we don't have a Jane Reid in our family line.
I would love to find out more about Henry (also known as Harry),  which regiment etc.

The man standing is definitely an artilleryman.  The Royal Sussex man never served in the artillery. so Ramsgate is a coincidence.  The Jane Reid may have been Bird, the writing is not good.

Apologies, Ramsgate may not be a coincidence, I had artillerymen at the front of my mind.

The Royal Sussex man left his effects to his widow Elizabeth L - does that add up?

Whatever, the man standing is not the Royal Sussex man or Frederick George.  As he is a stranger I suggest it is not worth trying to identify him.

Harry is also not entirely clear although he is definitely an artilleryman.  I find no records for the full name.  There are three artillery candidates for Henry S Young and 13 for Henry Young and 16 for Harry Young, not one of them with anything other than their army numbers which doesn't really get us anywhere.  Are there any other family clues at all?

It can be narrowed slightly as he would be a 14/15 Star recipient.

Haven't got there yet Jim! Still looking at the Ramsgate connection.

Complicated - there is another Ramsgate Frederick George Young who died in action October 1915 - he left his effects to a sister Mrs Emma Clara Mills - does she fit?

Hi. Sister Emma married Nathaniel Goldsmith wonder if it was her.  Their mothers name was Emma and was still living during this time.  They were both single in 1911 and living at home Belle Vue Cottages Ramsgate.  Henry did not marry until 1929.
I really do appreciate all this help you both are giving me as it is so frustrating.  My mum is the sole survivor of Henry's children and it would be lovely to be able to tell her more.  Looks like we were very wrong about the man standing but can confirm that Henry (Harry) is the man sitting, my grandad.

Still trying to eliminate candidates for Frederick George.  Another Ramsgate man died June 1915, son of Robert Anderson Young and Clara of Rodney Street - not him?

Hi  No sorry, that family had origins in Scotland, my family are originally Canterbury, Dover and Ramsgate only.  This is very frustrating but I am glad of your help

Frustrating I know but I really have no further ideas.

While one could trawl through the 42 HS (or variants) Youngs in the artillery medal cards to find those with the 1914 Star as jim1 suggest, medal cards don't have any identifying personal info so again, dead end for my ideas at any rate without more clues.
