A fifth cousin sent along a photo of some family items he had come across and we were wondering what they were. Any help and ideas appreciated.
-
They are lovely whatever they are. :)
How long are they?
Do they have any catches which can close the ends up? (similar to a neck chain)
-
I do not know. All I have to go on is the photo. But they are very nice. E Hawkins was the wife of 3xgreat grandfather's brother. H Norwell their mutual nephew.
-
I think it could be a watch chain ???
-
Most likely a watch chain. Google "double Albert" for some examples.

With a "button" in the middle rather than the cross bar? It looks that way, especially the first example.
-
The lack of a cross bar is interesting - still I am not sure what else it could be.
-
Could it be part of a chatelaine? Something similar to this:

It could be. What is that though?
-
A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it. Each chain is mounted with useful household appendages such as scissors, thimbles, watches, keys, vinaigrette, and household seals. (from Wikipedia).
It's quite delicate. I would expect a watch chain to be chunkier.

Similar to "Kurta Buttons".

Chatelaine is also the word for a female keeper of a castle. It's the word I use to refer to my partner rather than partner or other half or significant other etc The trouble is she hates the word and thinks it's pretentious.

Hopefully the link works. I have no idea if they are right about the collar button name, nor how one would wear them!

Tuxedo studs.
-
Thank you for all these ideas about what it could be.

Bow tie at the collar, cummerbund at waist, that usually leaves 3 fastenings of the shirt showing. Unless you have a shirt with a button cover then studs are the best option. Bit fancy with a interlinking chain.
