Title: Cantieni help
Post by: m.a on Saturday 17 February 18 03:54 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help me with info. on a Beat (unusual name) Cantieni born in Switzerland in or about 1853. Sorry no idea of the area, but he immigrated to Australia where he died in Victoria in 1928.
I know this is  a long shot, but have no other info.
His death cert. has no parents listed just the spouse and children here in Australia.
Grateful for any help.

Hi,
Beat is not an unusual forename in Switzerland!
Swiss civil BMD records are organised based on the home community of the family. This surname comes from Graubunden, and before 1800 there are 9 communities he could have come from. Use the search function here: http://www.hls-dhs-dss.ch/famn/index.php?lg=e to see them.
You could try the local genealogy society, use the link below for their details (NB Grisons is the English for Graubunden). The geneal-forum.com forum could be useful also.

Lots of info (in English) here: http://kunden.eye.ch/swissgen/schweiz-en.html.

Good luck.

PS: if you put SWITZERLAND in the post title you will get better response

Hello
His naturalization cert 28 Feb 1917  gives a birth place of Andeers Switzerland.
Ancestry family trees give a birth
27 Oct 1854 at Andeer to Joachim Cantieni and Menga Mani.

Lots of family trees on there are with their own bit of info.(including copies of original documents)
I'd have a browse.
