Title: What did Edwin Alexander Fairweather do?
Post by: Brie on Tuesday 20 February 18 13:03 GMT (UK)
Hello,

I am interested in Edwin Alexander Fairweather b 1880 Edmonton, UK.
1881 and 1891 he is with his family in Enfield, UK
1901 can't find him but I suspect he may be involved in the Boer War
1904 he marries Maude Lydia Cluse
1911 Maude and her daughter are in the UK with Maude's mother. No Edwin. Did he go to Canada ahead of her?

I have seen their deaths on an Ancestry board as Maude 1942 Penticton, BC and Edwin's as 1979 New Westminster, BC but I don't have verification of this.

I would like to know - if possible - why they left for Canada and what they did when there.

Thank you
Brie

Hi,

This could be Edwin on the outward passenger list -

Edwin Fairweather
Age 54
Birth Date - abt 1880
Profession - manager
Country of intended future permanent residence - England
Departure Date:   16 Aug 1934
Port of Departure - Liverpool, England
Destination Port - Montreal, Canada
Ship Name - Duchess Of Atholl

Travelling with the above Edwin is Maude Fairweather (54)

Thank you JJen. It certainly looks like them, an unusual combination of names so unlikely to be another couple.

It looks then as if they changed their minds about staying in the UK and went back to Canada. They had a daughter, Barbara in the UK (if I remember correctly b 1901)and may have had more children in Canada. It could be that they had left the children behind and missed them or they were visiting family when they died. The latter seems a bit of a coincidence though.

Outward Passenger List -

Edwin A Fairweather
Age:   39
Birth Date - abt 1880
Occupation - Accountant
Country of intended future permanent residence - Argentina
Departure Date - 21 Aug 1919
Port of Departure - London
Destination Port - Buenos Aires, Argentina
Ship Name - Highland Rover

Travelling with the above Edwin is Maude (41) Barbara L (10) and Mary E (6)

Looking at GRO, Barabara L has mother's maiden name as Cluse  :)

JJ, confused myself there! I misread it as them travelling to the UK. Now I see they were off to Canada but still intending to reside in the UK.

Now wondering at what point they did take up residence in Canada and also where was Edwin in 1911?

Gosh, I wonder what they were doing in Argentina? Perhaps accountancy is more exciting than I had previously thought :)

So Edwin was probably working away in 1911.

The Cluse family are my blood relations which is how I came to be intested in Edwin

Thanks again

It would appear that the family travelled back and forth form Argentina -

Outward -
Edwin A Fairweather
Age - 48
Departure Date - 11 Oct 1928
Port of Departure - London, England
Destination Port - Buenos Aires, Argentina
Ship Name - Avila

Again Maude, Barbara (19) and Elaina M (15)

In 1928 when Edwin travels into England he gives his address as 15 Sunningdale Ave, Westcliff on Sea.

Does that address ring any bells?

Thank you JJen - it sounds as if they had very interesting lives.

I will also find Elaina's birth and add it to my tree

Ship - Highland Laddie

Hello again,

The address doesn't ring any bells. Maude's father was an ironmonger in Tottenham Court Road. After his death the family lived in Enfield and by 1911 Maude's mother was in South Byfleet. Maude had a lot of siblings though, I'll see if any were there. There could be a Fairweather connection of course that I wouldn't know.

Right so the Argentina connection started early on in the marriage and continued for at least more than 15 years. Also it seems they lived there for some time. Then Westcliff on Sea and then they pop their clogs in Canada nearly 40 years apart! If of course the information about their deaths is accurate.

Thank you again

Can't confirm Maude's death with the resources available to me. May I suggest that you post a request on the Canada board for her death.

Thank you - I completely for got to look there. Found Elaina's birth registration M1913 Rochford, which I gather from Google is 4 miles from Westcliff. My geography of the south-east is I'm ashames to say appalling.

I was just looking at Maude's siblings - I'm revisiting the Cluses after time elsewhere - and see that her sister Edith married an Alfred G Chapeau in 1912. I found him as a clerk in 1901 but couldn't find him in 1911. I also found an Alfred Chicheley Chapeau who was an artist and painted a picture of the way to Tottenham. The artist Chapeau died in Canada but is buried with the brother. I had wondered if Alfred C Chapeau and Alfred G were one and the same and so will be following it up but if he is the Canada connection is interesting.

Looks like I am going to have a lot more to ask on the Canadian boards.

Besides Edith, Maude had a brother Harry who died early 20s, a sister, Isobel, who was living with their widowed mother in 1911 and then 4 brothers Allen B, Edgar, Arthur B and Leonard J.

On Ancestry Canadian Site WW1 CEF Attestation Papers there's listed

Allen Bernard Clune (sic)
Edgar Cluse
Arthur Bertram Cluse
and Leonard John Cluse!

Will have to get my questions sorted but it looks as if most of thew family end up in Canada.

The last I knew of the Cluse boys they were apprentice drapers or at school.

If you go here:

and just type in CLUSE as last name...the brothers' deaths seem to pop up.

Link to Edwin's death registration.  The one for Maude has not been filmed as yet.  Death for her was 1942 in Penticton.  Daughter Barbara died single 20 April 1991 Burnaby, BC.  Sister Elaina Jellard was informant for her death.
It can also be found on the Royal BC Museum Genealogy site.

Thank you Maureen and Cosmac. Very interesting, the two girls also went to Canada having spent their childhood Argentina and England.

I am pursuing the boys on Family Search at the moment - seems to be quite a bit of information there.

So at least 5 of the siblings end up in Canada, on dies young in England, the other two I will pursue after finishing the boys and Maude!

From a 1936 Outward Passenger list you find that Elaina Mary Fairweather was married to Heriot Montague Jellard.  They had a one year old daughter M.R. Jellard.  In a 1963 Canadian Voter list Elaina is living with her retired father and unmarried sister.  Ancestry trees show a death in England for Heriot later than 1963.
