I am trying to find some information about my 3 times Great grandfather George English.
He was born in East Yorkshire in 1839 and lived in the local area until after 1881.
On his sons British enlistment service records (1889). Its states his fathers address as Queensland.
Would anyone be able to help me find some details?
Did George indeed leave his family and go to Australia?

Can you tell us a bit more about him, please What were his parents' names and what was his occupation?

George's mother was called Mary and his father is unknown. However on his marriage certificate it says William Graves.
George was originally a Teazel grower but more often a labourer.
He had nine children i can find all of them in Britain apart from one Thomas born 1866 in Pocklington. His wife Ann Elizabeth was living in Stockton on Tees Durham in 1891 under another name and with another man.

Hmm I was just about to say ...
There is a death of a possible son in 1890
William ENGLISH, father George ENGLISH, mother Ann HALL
In electoral rolls
1903
George ENGLISH, Ipswich Road, Oxley, labourer
No others of that surname at that address.
Did it give an actual address in Queensland? Did it say Queensland, Australia? (There is a Queensland in Hampshire, England).
On Qld assisted immigration I can only see a Geo ENGLISH arriving in 1898. But of course he could have arrived via another state.

A nasty accident for a George ENGLISH at Oxley, in 1903 - he was about 70 years of age and earns his living wood-chopping

Several years ago on ABC radio I listened to an interview with a chap from Ancestry in Australia. His given name was Brad and he held a senior position with Ancestry. A listener phone-in led to many questions. One asked about the default info in their search engine drop boxes... the example offered was "queensland is in hampshire" . The man from Ancestry explained that is a 'drop box mis-type' .
I had no need to follow that up further at that time but now that it seems Ancestry may still provide 'Queensland, Hampshire....' as a default option and so I wonder whether there is such a location.

Ancestry PR man is Brad Argent. You wonder why they did not remove Queensland,Hampshire from their records if it is wrong, though there is Queensland in Cornwall and Ireland according to Genuki.

Perhaps Ros was not relying on Ancestry ... ???
I am now going through my paper BDM records for some of my ancestors to see if their Hampshire documents mention Queensland as a location 'over there' ...so far .... ziltch ...

If the father was Next of Kin on the enlistment records, more detail than merely a state in Australia would be required.

I had a vague recollection that there was another Queensland in England but yes the Hampshire reference came from the ancestry drop box (and possibly the vague recollection too)

I have not found any mention of Queensland being a place in Hants in my family history papers.
I have skimmed through our OPs other current threads and there is a snip showing Queensland. I think the snip may be from a British MoD medal index card from WWI.... :)

George's son Arthur English joined the prince of Wales West Yorkshire regiment in 1889.
It says on the papers Father George address Queensland.
Mother Ann Elizabeth Lowther Street York.
I will check if there is another Queensland in England
thanks for helping so far.

I hope no-one minds - I've posted a query on the Hampshire Board (including a link to this thread) to see if anyone there has any info about a Queensland in Hampshire.

I note also that Wikipedia suggests that there are others : Queensland, Calgary, a neighbourhood in Alberta, Canada and
Queensland, Georgia, an unincorporated town in Georgia, U.S.
Interesting!

A small district of Southampton was known as Queensland.
