Title: Overton Anglesey
Post by: Keston on Wednesday 21 February 18 23:23 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I have found records of a Martha Ailes Overton, bapt. 2 Jun 1814 on the in a Wesleyan Chapel on the Beaumaris Circuit.  Her parents are John Joseph Overton and Elinor.  John Joseph is listed as a sailor.

This Martha was I think the same Martha Overton who married Rowland Jones in 1834 in Bangor and this links in with family knowledge we have in a  number of ways.

There is also a record of a Martha Alice, 5 months old buried on 15 December 1813, but with no further details of parents.  These dates look too close for the girls to be sisters, but the similarity of the names I interesting.  Is there any way that there could be errors with these dates or some other explanation?

However, apart from these records, there don't seem to be any more for Overtons in Anglesey.

There is a marriage record for John Joseph Overton and Ellen Roberts on 3 September 1811.  This comes up on Findmypast within the "Faculty Office Marriage Licences" record set.  I am keen to understand how I could find out where this marriage may have occurred.  I can't find any other records from John Joseph in searches.  A later Census record I am pretty sure is for Elinor / Ellin notes that she was not born within Anglesey.

Can anyone help with any information on this record set and / or suggestions of next steps?

Many thanks for all your help,
KESTON.

Original register has her transcribed as Martha Stiles Overton, image can be viewed on FindMyPast

Other transcriptions have Martha A or Ailes.

Hi,
Do you have the marriage on 13 Oct 1818 at Pentraeth between Ellin Overton, widow otp and Joseph Jones of Llanbedrgoch, bachelor? Bride and groom both signed, witnesses Hugh Parry, Catherine ???

FindMyPast have the marriage but Overton is transcribed Oberton and the parish is given, wrongly, as Penrhosllugwy.

HiCas and DragonT,

Many thanks for your replies.  Cas, the Stiles seems to be a mistranscription as when you click to the original page on that record on  Findmypast it says Ailes.

DragonT, thank you for the tip about Joseph Jones, that is a new direction which I will look into!

Thanks,
Keston.
