I am looking for the birth of a Teresa McGurk, who was born about 1859. She married an Andrew Cassidy on 3rd Feb 1878 in Desertmartin, Derry. Andrew was born about 1857 in Desertmartin, Derry. The reason I haven't included this post in the Derry section is I can't seem to find a birth for a Teresa McGurk in Derry around 1859, which makes me think she was born elsewhere in Ireland...unless I have missed something. I would love to find her birth record as I would like to know the names of her parents. I match one person distantly on AncestryDNA who has a person in their tree with the surname McGurk born in Derry, but could be a coincidence.

What are you searching?
Church records??
Civil Records of Irish Births, Deaths and Marriages date from 1864 with non-Roman Catholic Marriages recorded from 1845.
The years covered by the release of the historic Indexes to the Civil Records of Births, Marriages and Deaths are:
Births: 1864 to 1916
Marriages: 1845* to 1941
Deaths: 1864 to 1966
-
I'm just doing general searches on Ancestry and FamilySearch, I am fairly new to family history stuff.
-
start with the marriage - Andrew Cassidy and Thersa McGurk, 3rd February 1878 at Coolcain? Roman Catholic Church (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/62d4b02622776). The register shows where the bride and groom lived and the names of their fathers.
-
The parish seems to be Desertmartin and Kilcronaghan - the Catholic Registers are at https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0359
-
The parish register of the marriage is here (https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633018#page/87/mode/1up), the baptisms records are available from 1848. Worth checking to see if that's where Theresa was baptised.
-
The marriage record shows fathers as James Cassidy (alive) and James McGurk (dead). Both living at Inniscarn [also spelt Iniscarn] which is in Desertmartin civil parish and Magherafelt Poor Law Union/Registration District.
https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/loughinsholin/desertmartin/iniscarn/
Remember that civil registration of births started in 1864 so for earlier dates you need to check for church records. Since marriages usually took place in the bride's church (which may or may not be the same as the groom's) that would be the place to start looking for Theresa's family.

There is a will available on PRONI for a Mary McGurk from Inniscairn who died on 19th May 1889 where she leaves her assets to her son Edward McGurk, In America, provided he comes home, if not it is to be sold and divided among his children.
To her daughter Teresa Cassidy, she leaves £6 sterling and to her grandson Francis Cassidy £1 sterling
Also £1 sterling to a Catherine O'Neil.
The will is signed by a Mary Murphy alias McGurk - she was aged 75 a widow when she died
The grandson Francis was born on 16 Jan 1879 to Andrew Cassidy and Theresa McGurk (Inniscarn)

Thank you so much everyone, this is incredible. I thought that Irish site you posted was something you had to pay for, didn't realise it was free. So is Teresa's mum Mary McGurk, and did Mary have the maiden name Murphy? Who is Edward McGurk?
-
Edward is Theresa's brother.
If you Google proni will calender search you will be able to find the find the will
-
The marriage record shows fathers as James Cassidy (alive) and James McGurk (dead).
Thanks so much, I mistakenly thought Andrew's father was John Cassidy and his mother Sarah Fullin, so this helped clear it up.

Could anyone help me find Andrew's baptism/birth record as well?

I'm confused here :-\
Could anyone help me find Andrew's baptism/birth record as well?
I thought this was the Andrew Cassidy who married Teresa McGurk in 1878? or are you asking about a different Andrew?

It is, I think he was born about 1857 in the Derry area, can't find him though...would love to find out his mother's name. Don't see his marriage either on these?

Going back to an earlier reply of mine-
Remember that civil registration of births started in 1864 so for earlier dates you need to check for church records.
Naturally you wouldn't have found anything via links that hallmark posted for a pre-1864 birth.

I tried to search church records, but didn't find anything. :(

As I mentioned earlier, marriages usually take place in the bride's church so Andrew might have come from a different parish. Another possibility is that there is a gap in the records around the time of his baptism or records don't start early enough.
