Does anyone know if there is somewhere that lists ALL the recipients of the Iron Cross during the Second World War? (I've searched & can only find short lists).
My Grandfather was awarded the Iron Cross when he served with the Waffen SS and I am trying to find out why he was awarded this particular honour? From the photo we have of him during the war, it looks like he's wearing an Iron Cross Second Class ribband on his buttonhole.
Cheers

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eisernes_Kreuz#Verleihungszahlen notes 3 million 2nd Class awards during the war so my guess would be that any lists would be broken down to some sort of unit basis rather than kept centrally. Do you know what unit specifically he served with? That may (more guesswork) help in an approach to https://www.dd-wast.de/en/home.html which is the point of contact for service records for WW2. Unfortunately their English web page is being changed so you'd have to use the German pages. This will be useful https://genealogy.stackexchange.com/questions/3915/finding-information-on-german-soldiers-from-world-war-i-and-world-war-ii
