My ggrandparents.George and Elizabeth Hydes married and lived in Evenwood,Durham before migrating to New Zealand.
The marriage certificate lists Elizabeth's father as
Robert Davis and her NZ death certificate similarly has father as Robert Davies, occupation miner and her mother as Sarah Rod.In researching her parents the most likely fit appears from 1841 census :-
Robert Davis age 40 -44 born out of county
implied wife Sarah age 40- 44 born out of county
and implied children Thomas,John,James,Sarah,Mary,Elizabeth -the latter age 1
and residence Evenwood,Durham.
I also have found a marriage record for Robert Davis and Sarah Rudd in Brough under Stainmore,Westmorland 27/12/1821.
Another on line record shows a christening for John Davis, father Robert ,mother Sarah at Toll Barr,Mickleton,Yorkshire.
Given Robert's occupation as a miner I suspect the family perhaps moved around the top of England seeking work opportunities.
So now I'm trying to get definitive vital details for both Robert and Sarah. While the above cited 1841census has place of birth "out of county",this is confirmed in the 1851 and 1861 C where Stainmore and Longrig,Westmorland are their listed birth places.
But immediately I strike a brickwall as records for Sarah Rudd show-
(1) baptised 14-1-1798 birth place Appleby
father Anthony Rudd mother Jane Blackett
and (2) baptised 1-9-1799 birth place Brackenbur,Appleby
father John Rudd mother Margaret Hornsby
Appreciative of any help or suggestions with my dilemma. Please excuse any delays in reply to responders of this request -it comes from New Zealand so time differences may contribute .
Thanks
Milt

If it was me I would be purchasing Elizabeth's birth certificate, that way I would be certain of the mother's maiden name.
-
According to the GRO, Elizabeth DAVIS birth reg Sunderland (24/256) Sept qtr 1839 has mother's maiden name HUGHES.
(This is the only Elizabeth DAVIS I can see born about the correct time in co Durham.)
-
Sorry, my mistake. Here she is transcribed as DEVIS at Auckland (24,19), mmn RUDD Sept qtr 1839.
-
That's the one I had found too, but I couldn't see the maiden name.
May I ask which site you used to find the mother's maiden name?
-
The General Register Office search facility now shows mother's maiden names (and age at death). You need to register, but searching is still free. This is the log in page

Thank you so much, this is so helpful and has solved many queries I had on my tree as I couldn't afford to purchase the certificates but needed maiden names to check I had the correct parents names and marriages.
Initially I couldn't work out why I couldn't get the site to work when I was logging in...then realised the last time I used the site I had an email address which I stopped using 5 years ago! :-[
