Thomas Reid (Reed on his marriage record) says on the 1881 and 1891 censuses he was born in 1847/48 St Martin's in the fields. Before his marriage in 1870 he doesn't seem to exist.
I thought I would try to find his birth record and send for the birth certificate but am confused about the registration districts of London. Cannot find a birth record specifically in St Martin's in the Fields.
I think I should order the marriage certificate first but would still like the birth certificate in due course....but which one! Since he was consistent on the 2 censuses, which district covers St Martin's in the Fields? Or is that a district in its own right?

It's here. (Volume 1 at that era)
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/st%20martin%20in%20the%20fields.html
Not all early births made it to the register though.

Thanks PaulineJ. I did find that page but am eternally confused!!! Does it mean that St Martin's in the Fields would come up as the actual district of birth on the birth records?
If so, either he wasn't registered, or he was born in another district.
As he is hard to find on the 1851 and 1861 and 1871 censuses I wonder if he was born in a workhouse like his wife. Maybe those births missed registration easier?

It should be here

St Martin in the Fields, like St George Hanover Square, is a place as well as a district.
Both are in Westminster.
He could have been born elsewhere and grew up in St Martin's thinking tht's where he was born.
Have you tried looking for a baptsim?

There is a baptism on Ancestry for a Thomas James Read bn. 6th Nov 1847 bt. 30th Dec 1847 to Thomas and Amelia at St.Martins in the Field. Abode is shown as workhouse.

The image shows the birth to be 6th December 1848

Is that them in Lambeth in 1871?

Ah OK. I looked at the church record and it is very feint and looked to me like Nov, but now you say that and looking at other dates and the bits that are visible do show December. Also there is the workhouse record of the birth on A too and that confirms December.
Thomas (snr) and Amelia looked to be regulars at the workhouse.

Wow, thank you all so very much, you're complete stars. Yes he did marry Hannah Shorland and if I send for the marriage certificate I'm sure it will tie in nicely with the baptism of Thomas, son of Thomas and Amelia.
Thanks once again :)
