Title: Help with location & date of photograph please of Ruth and Hephzibah
Post by: Avondale16 on Thursday 01 March 18 18:57 GMT (UK)
This is a photo of Ruth Stevens (1892-1946) & her sister Hephzibah (1882-1980) - both great aunts to me. Can anyone help with the likely location? The family had connections with Worthing, West Sussex & I know they went to Worthing for weekends/holidays but I have previously shown this to another family member & they said they did not recognise the style of window in the buildings behind as typical of Worthing.

Also as I'm notoriously bad at guessing ages would I be correct in thinking c1925 for a date of the photo & that the older lady is on left as we look??

If anyone can clean up the image & possibly add some colour to Ruth & Hep that would be a bonus.

More likely 1930s I think Keith.

As you can see the woman at the back is wearing a cloche hat. Add the short skirt = 1920's & probably mid-late decade.

Thanks Carol & Jim - are they wearing Easter Bonnets or just fancy hats?  :-\

The cloche hat worn by the lady in the distance doesn't appear to have a brim and that's why I went for 1930s but it's not that clear  :: :-\  also, given their birth dates... their ages don't seem to fit with 1920s to me?

The other thing I noticed was the older lady's watch strap. These were popular with Officers during WW1 & became a bit of a fashion trend post war but I've not seen any in the 30's. like this.

These hats remind me of my Gran's hats, she was a keen milliner and used to make her
own hats.  A higher smooth crown and a narrow-mid range brim.  See attached photo taken
1934-35 in Aust.  I think these ladies have made their own hats which are quite elaborately
trimmed.   The lady on the right could be in her 40's and the older lady on the left 10 years
  older based on d.o.b.

I wondered about Brighton seafront but the railings behind this couple aren't right, Brighton's are more ornamental.  The building has 4 floors and possibly a basement so I doubt it would be Worthing.

I wondered if the sign behind Ruth & Hep would give a clue but I can't read it!!!!!

Unfortunately Keith, the sign text looks blown out and there are a lot of empty pixels.

Brilliant Rosie - I'd forgotten Hep moved to live in Hastings after Ruth died

I was just looking at the same photos of Hastings & yes I'm sure they are sitting on the edge of the sea wall

Mystery solved!

Thank you
