Hello! I have been doing family tree research for roughly 20 years now, but I've never been able to break through my great-grandparents on my dad's side. I have photos from my great grandmother Sofia Drozd's family, but I know nothing about her or them. Her husband my great grandfather Prokop Oneskewicz came from what is modern day Belarus, so I am guessing they spoke the same language but not sure if it was Russian or Polish. I'm hoping someone will know the approximate date of the photo, because that will tell me if the Sofia in that photo could be my great grandmother and in knowing that I will learn if those are her parents and brother! I'd also love more opinions on what language this is, as I've been told Ruthenian or Cyrillic, and where that might mean she came from. Thank you!

There is a Zofia Drozd born 1887 Austria enters the USA aged 18 years - Antwerp Belgium to New York on the Zeeland. Going to an Uncle Cawel Drozd in Forest City PA.
Hmm also Zofia Drozd - born 1892 and arrived 1911 and another same name born 1894 arrived 1912. Not such an unusual name after all.

Hi all,
It looks like the Findagrave page was created by the OP (same user name). It states Sofia's date of birth as 15 May 1890 in Austria so if the little girl in the photo is Sofia, it would have been taken mid/late 1890's - I'm no expert at photo dating but I'm not sure this photo is 1890s :-\

It's more likely that the Mother is Sofia which would make her in her 30s and she looks very like the the lady in the first photo posted by Sandra.

Yes Carol, that would make more sense, and as you say they do look alike. I think the OP is thinking/hoping that the little girl is Sofia from what was said in the first post.
I'm hoping someone will know the approximate date of the photo, because that will tell me if the Sofia in that photo could be my great grandmother and in knowing that I will learn if those are her parents and brother!

So yes, I am the one who added Sophia Oneske on FindAGrave, and I'm also the owner of the Oneske Family Tree site that was posted. That is the Sophia I am researching.
What I do know is that Sophia is NOT the mother in that picture. My great grandmother Sophia had a single son with my great grandfather Prokop Oneskewicz.
I do have some post cards sent to my great grandmother from an Anna Strilecka, and it looks like she might write "sister" in them. So my thought is if this photo date-wise isn't correct to be Sophia as a child, it might be she had a sister named Anna and Anna named a child Sophia after her sister. However the obvious hole in this theory is that the last name on the photo for all four people is Drozd, and if Anna married she would have likely taken the last name of her husband (Strilecka I would assume). Or maybe sister was just a term of endearment and doesn't actually mean biological sister?
This stuff tortures me!!!

I noticed that too. I have other photos of alleged family members where they have wedding rings on (right hand, middle finger). But these people look pretty poor, wouldn't you say? Perhaps it just wasn't in the budget or wasn't important?

On balance, it would appear that Anna sent this to your Great Grandmother and it is of Anna and her family.
