Great minds think alike, MaxD!
I have often wondered why people spell Ancestry with asterisks? ???
-
Likewise! It drives me mad!
-
M* t*o.
-
It's daft ;D
-
Putting asterisks around *words* in comments makes the word bold, bringing the reader's attention to the said word.

It's not that ,Malky. It's people who refer to Ancestry as A*c*y (or similar), as if it's forbidden.
-
Do you think it's "BBC" mentality?! - Mustn't mention a brand name, even if all the world knows what you are writing about? :-\
It's just plain stupid! ;D
-
I think some people do it because of the copyright infringement, as in we can't post 1911 census results etc, they may think you cannot mention Ancestry as it may infer you are doing something wrong.................................................. I used to a long time ago :-[ ;D
Frank.

"A*c*y (or similar), as if it's forbidden"
Technically, it is forbidden, as if printed as Ancestry, that is advertising, which "can" be frowned upon here as we have seen in the last week with a certain set of posts from Sharon James from Medtrans. The censor police may come out and discommunicate the poster depending on their frame of mind at that time.

Just try putting Ancestry into the RC search facility and you'll see that it is quite acceptable.

:) I must admit I have been a culprit of the * censoring, but if copyright is involved if I use the initials of my usual site that begins with F and ends in P Rootschat prints the full name?!

No, its not forbidden, at least according to a moderator

Thanks for that JenB :)
I was asked by PM from someone on this site to refrain from writing Ancestry or FindMyPast in full for reasons explained in replies 8 and 9.
:)

Was the person who PM'd you a moderator?
If not, then just ignore them! :D

Well, I thought that you couldn't specify that you needed a lookup from a particular (specified) Source, as you would then be inviting breach of Ancestry/ FindMyPast/others T&Cs

But simply writing Anc****y wouldn't get you off that hook!
Also, some people are just asterisking it when there is no request for a lookup - "I have my tree on Anc****y", for example.
-
I must admit that when I first started posting on R****Ch** I wrote A***y because everybody else seemed to be doing it - I had no idea why.
As to the BBC thing there were alleged to be only three trade names you could mention. Dave Allen told a joke about it: "I was reading the Times in my Rolls Royce while being driven to Harrods to buy some bottles of that black beer from Ireland."

My, and probably the understanding of others is based on bullet mark 8 in :-
