Title: William Hawker on convict ship Adelaide 1849
Post by: ankerdine on Monday 05 March 18 20:44 GMT (UK)
I have found William Hawker, who was convicted of sheep stealing at Castle Morton in 1847, and transported for 10 years. He was on the convict ship Adelaide arriving in Australia in 1849 and I wondered what happened to him.

Can anyone help me please?

His 1849 issued Ticket of leave #1438 allowed him to remain within the Moreton Bay district (in present day Queensland).

Agree with Robert ... more info needed  :) to avoid confusing with others of that name.

Warwick Pioneer
MRS. LYDIA HAWKER
HER DEATH RECORDED
(By "Gooragooby," Dalveen.)
The Press announcement some time back of the death of Mrs. Lydia Hawker, at "Ascot," Inverell, New South Wales, where she had been residing with her daughter (Mrs. Chas.F. Turner) for the past 12 years, reminded the writer of the fact that for many years deceased was a resident of Victoria-street, Warwick.
The late Mrs. Hawker, who had reached the venerable age of 90 years, was predeceased by her husband by over 56 years, his death in December, 1874, being brought about by an accident whilst watering a horse at the Condamine. The animal knocked Hawker down, and in the fall his head came in contact with a stone, and a fracture of the skull resulted in his demise.
A New England newspaper in referring, to the passing of Mrs. Hawker, stated that "the end, though sudden, was not unexpected, as she had been ailing for some time, yet although suffering was always cheerful. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her, as her cheery nature endeared her to all who made her acquaintance. Mrs. Hawker, although so advanced in years, retained her faculties remarkably, and till quite recently could read without the aid of glasses. She was a native of Devonshire, England, and came to Australia at the age of nine, years, settling at Warwick."
Of her family, deceased—predeceased, by a married daughter and a grown-up son-is survived by three sons, one daughter, 25 grand children, 60 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Of her sons, Mr. Sam. Hawker, of Mill Hill is the eldest. An old lady friend—possibly the oldest surviving female native of Warwick writes me in the following appreciative terms regarding the deceased: "Do you remember old Mrs. Hawker, who lived in Victoria-street? She was an aunt of John Cox and his sisters, who still live in the old home in The Pocket. Their father (Mr.John Cox, senr.) was Mrs. Hawker's brother and I can remember her as a young woman walking into town past our place and my great ambition then was to be like Miss Cox. She was a very fine old lady, well read and quite conversant with all the leading topics, of the day. It is not many who see ninety descendants."

Judy, would you like us to hunt up Lydia, nee COX?

This looks like the COX family's arrival

New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896
per Fairlie arr 7 August 1848 - all listed as Church of England and all can read and write
Samuel COX, 39, wool sorter, b Alderney
Alice, 45, wife, b Axford, Somerset
William, 16, son, carpenter, b South Molton, Devon
John, 14, son, grocer, b South Molton, Devon

in 1841 census this family was living in Alphington St, parish of St Thomas, Exeter.

The Fairlie arrived into Sydney. These articles give a list of the types of immigrants aboard.

What can I say to you all but a very big thank you.

Whilst I have been asleep you folk in the southern hemisphere have been so busy on my account. It will take a while for me to take it all in but I will add further to this thread soon.

I always wanted a convict. It sounds funny I know. My husband and I met an Australian couple some years ago who were visiting England from Newcastle, NSW, they were so lovely and amusing because they were competing with each other as to whose family had been resident in Australia the longest!

I need to do some more work at this end as I didn't know William Hawker's parentage before today.

Thank you so much Rootchatterers! X

I'm currently trying to find the original William Hawker at the beginning of his life c1823 in Castle Morton. There was a Thomas Hawker who was charged for sheep stealing  few years later who received 5 years penal servitude.he was an ancestor.

Thanks for your continued interest.

Hi

It looks like William Hawker was in the 1841 census at CastleMorton by himself.

Looking at some of the criminal records available one notes that William was married in England and had two children.

There is this possible marriage

William Hawker mar. Harriett Hodges 2 Jun 1842 at CastleMorton.

You may have already seen this account from Berrow's Worcester Journal, Thursday, December 31, 1846

SHEEP STEALING
On Wednesday last a labourer called William Hawker, living at Welland, was committed by the Rev C. Dunne to take his trial at the ensuing sessions, for sheep stealing.
Some days ago Mr Thomas Price of Castlemorton, lost a sheep from his flock which were feeding on the common but gave no information to the police as it was thought that it had strayed from its fellows.
The active Police officer, Raby, however hearing that this Hawker had been living beyond his means, that is feasting on something when he did not know how to get his salt with it, began to enquire whether some animal had not been missed in the neighbourhood.
Having learnt Mr Price's loss and having obtained a description of the skin from that gentleman, he paid a visit to Hawker's house on Tuesday evening in company with Archer, the Welland constable.
Just as they reached the house Hawker came out with a candle in his hand, and went round to a shed at the back of the premises.
Presently he returned with a bag on his shoulders, and whilst he was depositing this in a cupboard Raby and Archer pounced upon him.
On further searching the house various joints of mutton were found, making in all about a quarter of a sheep.
Mr Price at once identified the skin and so Hawker was sent to spend his Christmas holidays in gaol.

The newspaper article was fascinating and to hear that William was already married and had a wife and 2 children was unexpected.

I certainly wasn't anticipating such a story when I commenced this thread.

Two of the three children of William and Harriet are still with their grandparents (William and Mary HODGES) in 1861 but now at Welland.
William Hodges   59, carpenter, b Eastnor Herefordshire
Mary Hodges   59, laundry, b Castlemorton (as are William and Jane)
William Hawker   18, grandson -  In the column where it asks about disability, there is an entry for William which I think says "Cripple"
Jane Hawker   12, g'daughter

An on-line tree which cites references suggests that William died, aged 27 and FreeBMD has this death:
William Hawker, 27,
Registered: Upton-on-Severn, Vol 6c, p171 (Upton registration district included Castlemorton)
Jane marries William Williams in 1870 at Worcester (Henry is a witness)  and is still in Worcester with her husband in 1911.

In 1861 Henry is in the hamlet of Hanley Castle, employed as a servant for Richard and Ann HILL.

I can't see him with certainty in 1871.

This appears to be his marriage and the birth of his daughter (from FreeBMD)
Marriage, March qr 1873, registered Rochdale,
Henry HAWKER, Vol 8e, p40 and on the same page Emma HAMILTON

Birth  - seems to be two entries on the index
Dec qr 1870, registered Rochdale
Hawker    Edith Alice        Rochdale Vol 8e, p15
HAWKER    Edith Alice        Rochdale Vol 8e, p16

Thank you for your recent additions to my query.

I suppose Henry learnt his trade from his grandfather.

Wouldn't it be interesting if any of these people had kept diaries but maybe they couldn't read or write.

Can anyone suggest literature which I could read easily to try and understand more about this period in Australian history?
