Title: PARKINSON, Thomas. Looking for an obituary, if there is one?
Post by: marchbank on Tuesday 06 March 18 00:22 GMT (UK)
Thomas PARKINSON was born c 1776, not, according to 1841 census, in Westmorland.
He died 14 December 1850 (I have his cert). he was, according to Westmorland Gazette, the master of the East Ward Union Workhouse for 9 years, and before that 26 years at the Kirkby Lonsdale workhouse, (so. Kendal Mercury). Would this have given him enough Kudos/ notability to have produced an obituary?
Nothing comes up on FindMyPast so nothing in the papers they have online.

I have no idea where to look for his birth/baptism and was hoping an obit might tell me where he came from.

I have been able to track his son Joseph of Kirkby Stephen.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

I think the death notice is probably all you're going to find. Not sure if you've also seen this - he grew a giant rhubarb in 1845  ;)

I don't seem to be able to attach the image, so here's what it says:

"GIANT RHUBARB - A fine specimen of the Victoria rhubarb has been raised by Mr. Parkinson, master of the workhouse, Kirkby Stephen. One leaf measured in circumference nine yards and a half; in breadth four feet four inches; length of the stalk, two feet three inches. The stalks weighed together twelve pounds two ounces."

Westmorland Gazette, Saturday, September 13, 1845, Vol. XXVIII, Issue 1370, p.2

Is this Joseph's baptism - at Kirkby Lonsdale, 27 April 1817, parents Thomas and Mary? (on familysearch) If so, his mother Mary is with him in the 1861, her place of birth is Cockerham, Lancashire.

Will look for a marriage of Thomas to Mary ...
