Title: John Richards Suicide Nottingham
Post by: pansypetal on Tuesday 06 March 18 20:19 GMT (UK)
Wondering if a 2nd set of eyes could help.

I have spent several days searching the BNA for a report of a suicide and am struggling.

John Richards born 1863 in Carlton Nottingham.

Committed suicide some time after April 1891 (have him living with his parents on the census) and Feb 1905 when the knowledge of his suicide was used in a court record by the defense to try an plead insanity runs in the family.

There are other suicides in a small area of the branch of the family, all in Nottignham

Thanks

Hi PansyPetal

I cannot see a death for a John Richards in Nottingham (of the right age) between 1891 and 1905 on FreeBMD.

The only suicide I have come across so far is this one:

Nottingham Evening Post Nottinghamshire, England
26 Oct 1903

SUICIDE AT CARLTON
permanent situation. —John English, aged 19. employed in printing work 3 at Gedling, said that was with the deceased all Saturday evening. They were in : the Albion. Sneinton Market until ten minutes to o'clock, and they walked homo to Carlton; they were both

Thanks Giggsy

I'll try and search the full article to see if it could be.

I've tried every combination I can think of to use to try and find.

I have also struggled to find a possible death.

Its abit of a mystery

Thanks again

Heather

Could this be him?
Newspaper article from 23 feb 1899
Supposed suicide of a ckub steward

Last night, john richards, steward of the penga?  Conservative club was found dead in his office with a bottle of carbokic acid by his side.

There are two deaths in nottinghamshire on free bmd for march quarter 1899. One is aged 27 mansfield district and the other is aged 68, basford district so not sure with one it relates to. Where was he living in 1891 and not sure where the penga consevative club is. The typing was a bit blurry so im not sure if it says penga. Will try to find out.

Burial Brinsley
28 Feb 1899 John Richards aged 68 abode Underwood. In the notes it says
"Cor War." I have NO idea what this means.

Sadly the 27 year old's burial is not on NFHS
??? would he have been buried in a Churchyard, in 1899, if he committed suicide  ???

There are only 4 burials for a John Richards in Nottinghamshire between 1891 and 1905
29 Nov 1897--6 Dec 1902--26 May 1904--9 Dec 1905. You would need credits to view.

WOW thanks everyone.

I have managed to find an article in 1894 about an assault he committed, so can narrow down the possible suicide time line to Feb 1894 - Feb 1905.

I'll keep plodding away, but thanks again for taking the time to look
