Title: Maryann/Marion Dempster Morris
Post by: snow_angel on Tuesday 06 March 18 23:30 GMT (UK)
Looking for info on Maryann Morris nee Dempster.  Her name could possibly be spelled Marion.

She was born sometime around 1840.   She married George B(ropes) Morris (1840-1912).   She had a son named George Buckley Morris.   She likely spent the majority, if not all, of her life in Pennsylvania.

I am particularly looking for the names of her parents.  Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome :)

What is the source of the dates you have for Maryann and George, please?  Although online trees shouldn’t be uncritically relied upon, I see that other researchers have the couple born mid-1850s rather than c1840.  Have they been found in the censuses following their marriage?

Do you have a date and place for their marriage, and for Maryann’s death?

Do you have a date and place for the birth of George Buckley Morris, and/or details of any siblings of his?

The dates for Maryann are mostly an estimate based on George Buckley's birthdate of 1/7/1868.   He was possibly born in Delaware.  I don't know about any siblings.

I have a death certificate for George B Morris that lists his birth and death dates (1/13/1840 - 2/9/1912) and lists his parents as John T Morris & Susan Baker.  I have found very little other information, so a lot of this is supposition about identity.

I've looked on Ancestry, Archives, and MyHeritage and can find very little information about any of these people.  I can't find any marriage or death info that matches anything else.

I have found the George B Morris whose grave gives his dates as 1841-1912:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/14635265

...but, rightly or wrongly, that grave entry has been indexed by someone as for George Baker Morris, which is not a match for the names you have.

In addition, this George (of Cambria Co, PA) is shown in the 1880 census as married to a Jane with children Emma M Morris 14 and Benjamin Morris 10.

He doesn’t obviously look like the right George to me ???

If your George junior died in Maywood, Cook, Illinois on 28 August 1964 (buried at Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, PA on 1 Sep 1964) then his birthdate was recorded as 7 January 1878, rather than 1868.

Birthplace: Delaware

He was a widowed carpenter ar the time of his death.

Parents: George Morris and Mary Tomlin.

Mary A wife born PA Mar 1855 married 27 yrs, had 12 children of whom 9 living
Bertha K daur born PA Jun 1876 - dressmaker
Geo B jnr son born Delaware Jan 1878 - blacksmith <<<
Harry son born PA Jul 1881 - driver
Edward A son born PA Dec 1885 - mill hand
John son born PA Dec 1891
Lotta? daur born PA Apr 1894 [she is “Charollet” in 1910 so presumably Charlotte or a variant thereof]
Mary A daur born PA Apr 1896

Clara daur born PA Oct 1899

By 1910 they had moved to Chester, Burlington, New Jersey (no additional children).

Thanks, the woodland ave info looks like it could be right.  Maybe if I use the adjusted dates I can find more info.

Further research implies her name could be MaryAnn Dempster Tomlin.  So, the info re Geo Jr dying in Illinois could potentially be correct as well.  I have no info on him being in IL, so it's hard to know for sure.

They seem to be in Sorrel Horse, Pennsauken Township, Camden N.J. by 1915:

George Morris born PA Jul 1853 - farmer
Mary born PA Mar 1854
Edward born PA Dec 1886
Mary born PA Apr 1896
Joseph born PA Aug 1898
Clara born PA Oct 1899

Next household:

John Morris born PA Dec 1892 <<< their married son
Anna (wife) born NJ May 1893

Next household:

William Stinger born Jan 1876 PA
Bertha (wife) born Jun 1876 PA <<< their married daughter

Some of these dates are slightly different from those seen in 1900 but it seems to me to be the family.

Given the move to Pennsauken, NJ, this looks likely to be the correct grave for George B Morris snr (dates shown as 1854-1931):

I can’t see any evidence to support the Dempster name for Mary Ann, I’m afraid.  What is the source for that?

Thanks for the help.

Dempster was listed on one of the records I'd found in previous research.  After further digging, it looks like her name was Tomlin instead.

I have a feeling that DEMPSTER was the name of Geo B snr's step-father.

If you look for Henry S DEMPSTER in 1870 in Philly-you'll see Geo B MORRIS and Clara MORRIS sort of "squeezed" into the DEMPSTER family.

In 1860 the family are transcribed as DINSISTER (Philly).

George Buckley Morris was my grandfather born January 7, 1878 and died August 28, 1964 while living with his son in Maywood, Illinois. Both he and my grandmother, Maud, are buried in Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, PA. They had 5 children.
I have George's mother listed as MaryAnn Tomlin as mother's maiden name on the certificate of death, but my aunt's notes list her as Dempster. Could someone help me clarify this and lead me in the right direction?
