Title: Thomas and Violet Daniels, Hackney
Post by: Anna99 on Wednesday 07 March 18 22:12 GMT (UK)
Hello.  I am looking for information on my great-uncle (1909 - 1968, originally from Churchdown, Glos) and his wife Violet (nee Slope d. 2002); they had no children.  Specifically, my mother remembers that they used to own a cafe on Hackney Road and that is something I would like to know more about if possible?  I'm guessing it would have been in the 1930s to 50s.  If anyone has any information about businesses local to that area, it would be good to know - even better if someone remembers them! Thank you.

They married in 1934 - have you looked for them on the 1939 register to see where they were living at that time?

They stay there until 1939.
Struggling to see them after that.

Thank you both - You inspired me to look at the electoral registers with more vigour and found that they had lived at 509 Hackney Road from at least 1948 - 1963.  Having looked on street view, that address is in a row of shops so that is possibly where the cafe was.  However, street numbers do change so my next step will be to look at maps of the area at that time to check that.  Thank you again.

If Violet was Violet Rose Slope b 1909 with mmn Collier then this looks to be her father, who married as William Benjamin Slope 1897 Hackney to Beatrice Collier?

He was a Coffee House Keeper in 1911?

Ooh that certainly is interesting!  Violet's mother was definitely Beatrice Slope - when my grandmother died, I inherited a lot of bits and pieces, including commemorative funeral cards; one of these was for a Beatrice Slope who died 16.01.55 aged 79 and was interred in Abney Park cemetery. It looks as if Thomas and Violet carried on her family business, although 'dining rooms' may have made it sound grander than it was - my mum described it as a 'greasy spoon'. I shall do some more digging.  Thank you so much for these contributions.  I have gone a long way to tracing my family tree and it is good now to be adding some colour and finding out about their lives - the most interesting bit  :)

Hmmm - either a slight lack of imagination when naming their children, or the names William and Benjamin were extremely important to them  :)

As a footnote to this, this week, I found a second cousin I didn't know I had on Ancestry; I mentioned I was researching Thomas and Violet and she scanned me the following Gazette newspaper article about Tom's funeral:

TRADERS LAST RESPECTS. Past President of Hackney and District Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Thomas Daniels, was buried at Abney Park Cemetery on Monday.  The funeral, attended by a large number of Chamber of Commerce members, including several other past presidents, left the restaurant at Hackney Road,  Shoreditch, where he and his wife, Vi, kept on her family tradition of over eighty years.  Mr Daniels, president of the Hackney branch in 1960-61, was an active member, dealing with old people's welfare, the disabled and war pensions.  He was also an official of the Kingsmead Youth Club.

The end of the story.  I'm pleased to find out more about Tom and Vi - thank you all Rootschatters for your help.

Thomas Daniels was my uncle and my grandmother's (Rose Craven née Daniels) brother. I was 10 when he died. Vi was my Aunt. She lived in a flat above their cafe on the Hackney Road until her death.

Having had a sleepless night thinking about Auntie Vi I remembered that when Tom died she moved in to a flat down the road above a shop which has been many things over the years. I rummaged around my old address books and found her last address which was Flat B, 491 Hackney Road, Bethnal Green E2 9ED.
