Title: Bari war cemeterym Italy
Post by: Jennarembailey on Thursday 08 March 18 10:51 GMT (UK)
I am researching a soldier who is buried at Bari. italy
I am trying to find information so I can find out which company he served in
To enable me to find the war dairies and the circumstances of his death on that day.
I have the Bari record for him as follows:-

Stanley Robert Piet  Born 16th November 1902  Chichester
He enlisted at Brighton   Service no:  13019289
joined 1 Centre Pioneer Corps for training on 3rd May 1940
Acting company quartermaster sergeant at his death
He died on 2nd December 1944 Italy
CWGC give the following information:
BARI, Cemetery, Italy.
Grave Ref No is XL.C.6
son of Robert Ephraim Piet and Annie Piet, of Chichester
husband of Louise Piet of Chichester.

I assume he would have been awarded the Italy star and others.

His family are not is a position to purchase his military records at this time.
Any information you can offer me would be very much appreciated
Regards Jenny Bailey

Unfortunately, whatever war diaries exist for his company, they too will need to be purchased and the cost is likely to be more than the £30 his service record would cost.

Extracts of the extant war diaries have been published on the RPC pages of the RLC archive, a search with "Italy"  in the title brings up 138 diaries shown on the link:http://www.rlcarchive.org/JournalRan
but you are of course right, you need to know his company first.

Long shot is the Pioneer Corps Association although they are clear that they don't hold service records and need to know the company.  Link here:

A gloomy reply I'm afraid but par for the course for WW2 records and people.

Dear Max
Thank you for your reply.
I did contact the pioneer corps last week they said I needed the records, maybe the family will be able to at sometime.
Thank you once again

CWGC Don't list his unit just his regiment so you would need the records to identify the unit within the Pioneer Corps he was serving with when he died if you wanted to check the war diary.
