This is my 2nd great aunt (born 1841 & died 1903). As you can see this image was taken in Towanda, Pennsylvania & I know that she emigrated to America in 1883. Is it possible to narrow down the date when this image was taken? - unfortunately I do not have the back.
Also if the quality of the image allows can I ask for some colouring please. If not then just a clean-up would great.

I think it;s early 1890s, Keith

Thanks Gadget - could be to mark her BIG 50? ;)

I've had a detailed look at it, Keith, and it's very like the first scan that you put up of Steve with her favourite doll - very pixellated and sharpened during the scan so there is a kind of yukkie banding. I'll have a go late this evening and I'm sure the others will as well.

Oh dear Gadget - I am a novice when it comes to image quality. Am I doing anything wrong when I scan the image at 300 dpi? Can you give me any guidelines to what you need to ideally work with?
Keith
-
We really like 300-600 dpi with no compression and no sharpening, etc., although it can be difficult because of the size limitation of 500kb.
If you have probs with the size, you can send to me, as before, or any of the others and we can put it up for you, or you could use drop box.
I'm sure we'll have a go with this one, if you have probs.

The dropbox and the 2 e-mailed ones are much better, Keith. :D
I'll get on with one of them after dinner :)

That's good news - never used Dropbox before so I sent by email as well just in case. ::)
Now I'm wondering if some of my other dodgy images that people have struggled with before could be improved :-\
-
Early 1890s I would say...I will put this one on my list for tomorrow Keith ;D
I have so enjoyed working on all your beautiful photos, it's been such a pleasure :D

Super - I always look forward to seeing what you create :D
Gadget says the images I've put in Dropbox are better than this one but they are too big to post on RootsChat. If you PM me your email I will share with these you ;)
Thanks for your help with the dating of this image.
When I first put an image of great grandfather on here a little while ago I was really only expecting help with dating the image & I was blown away by all the colourisations that people created. It's been a great pleasure sharing the family photos & a delight to see what you & all the others have done with them. I still have a few more.......

One from me..from the posted pic...

That's great Andy - after what Gadget said I wasn't expecting anything as good as this.
Thanks so much
Keith

In case anyone else attempts the one that Keith put up - here's the dropbox version, very slightly compressed.
I'll get on with it later today, Keith,

Love that larger scan . . . . . . You can see the character lines on her face . . . . Makes her seem more 'real'. Attractive woman wasn't she.
Wiggy.

Agreed Wiggy - she has always stood out in my old family photos collection!
Thank you Gadget for posting this version :)

2 from me of this lovely lady. I'll let you decide if she was grey haired or not. Personally I prefer the grey.
-
Both of these are great Jim - like you I think she suits grey hair.
Great work
Keith
-
Lovely, Jim :)
I think it was grey as she was 50 ish and she was unlikely to have coloured it - unlike some of us these day ;D
(must get my roots sorted soon :-X )
-
Thank you Gadget for posting the drop box version, it helps greatly with restoration.
Pat
-
Lovely work Pat - great colour choice for her dress - you almost feel like she is going to turn & look at you! :D
Thank you
Keith

A wash and brush up for the lovely lady.

Lovely restoration Carol - Eliza or Effie as she was called brushes up well ;)
Love the framing & tint
Keith

...and the colour version.
Added...Mmm..not wild about it now I've posted it...I didn't find this one easy to colour :-\
Now swapped for an alternative choice...I have tried to keep her original complexion.
Carol
-
maybe this one is better.
Carol
-
I think I prefer the second one Carol - maybe the pink on the first one is a little strong :-\
The texture of her dress & her laughter lines look great.
Thank you for all 3
Keith
-
Yes me too...I have swapped it now as I didn't like the other one. Must try harder ::) ;D ;D ;D

I've been helping a friend trace some rellies from here to Banff to Stirlingshire to Norwich to Durham, so a bit behind.
A simple one to be going on with. Colour might be a while...
Gadget
-
Simple but very effective - makes a lovely contrast to the coloured versions
Thank you Gadget & thanks also for putting up with all my schoolboy imaging questions :) :)
-
I have the feeling that she was trying not to grin - sparkly eyes and lips a bit tight together!
Don't worry about the scanning probs, etc., just ask away. I've been helping people get their scanning sorted for years. It started with Wiggy when she first started putting up photos for us to restore. I stayed up nearly all night getting her sorted but she's pretty good at it these days. She's a restorer now ;D ;D ;D

I agree - looks like she would have been a fun person to know :D

Another version from the Gadget upload.....
-
Wow! thanks Andy - you can certainly see the difference in the finish when using the better quality image.
I think the black dress suits her well - this is turning into another fantastic collection.
Thanks
Keith
-
Not able to get onto my 'colouring' computer at the moment but tried this tea rose/cerulean tint to give her more warmth.
-
That's a lovely tint Gadget - it really suits her & the age of the photo
Thank you

So much easier to work on and get the decent results isn't it Andy - well worth the second effort.
Look what happens when there is a decent scan Keith - everyone wants to 'have a go'.
I do too - but rather busy at the moment - and you already have a raft of wonderful work.

I'm very lucky & do appreciate everyone's great work - it's been a joy having all these family photos being given a whole new life. They are now being enjoyed by family in the USA, Canada, New Zealand & Australia as well as in the UK.
I am trying to get the best possible images for the talented people on here to work with :)
Keith
-
Right - not because you need it, (but because it was a pleasure to play with and I couldn't resist! . . . . and because each of us has our own interpretation . . . ;D ;D) - herewith my minimalist restore! :D :D :D
And as Gadget claims to have taught me all I know - and she's right there, - then she has to take the good with the bad! ;)
-
Every version on here is different - your minimalist restore is a very welcome addition to the collection Wiggy - much appreciated
Keith :)

another for your lovely collection. , Tommy

As an old boss of mine once said, "When you can't work with what you want, you have to work with what you've got!"
I do tend to overcook when trying to eliminate the pixelation of lo-res images. Unfortunately, unless you are an artist (which I definitely aint) its all to easy to end up with skin texture that looks like a party balloon. ;D
-
Just seeing how she's looks at this size and with a bit of powder ~
(hair starting to break up at this size)
-
Another beautiful image of Eliza - very glamorous - she is now officially my most popular rellie posted on RootsChat!
Thanks to Tommy & all the other talented people for these lovely restorations.
Keith

and another one from Gadget - so nice to see her face close-up & so clear - I don't mind about the hair ;)
Beautiful
Keith
