Title: Hearthtax.org.uk - any news about this website?
Post by: Gen List Lass on Sunday 11 March 18 06:36 GMT (UK)
I've been looking for this website after a few years lapse and find its gone. Googling around I found it had possibly been corrupted and taken down.

Any possibility of it going live again? Brilliant site!

This is the latest news I can find on their blog

Hearth Tax Online
After a ransomware attack in the summer, Hearth Tax Online continues to be down. We’re currently working on restoring the service: watch this space for an exciting announcement about the future of the web site coming soon.

Are you looking for somewhere particular Gen List Lass?
I see you have some Scottish roots.
I presume you have seen this site -
https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/historical-tax-rolls

Hearth Tax 1691 - 1695
Plus lots of other taxes at various times - original images, and all free!! ;)

Hi Goldie

It's Northumberland I'm waiting for. When the site was still live a few years ago, I downloaded all of Co Durham so will do the same when the site returns. I saw the Scotlandsplaces site at the same time I was looking for hearthtax.org.uk

Someone once told me, if you see something on the net, save it 'cos it might not always be there!

Lass, don't expect much and you won't be disappointed but have a look here:

https://web.archive.org/web/sitemap/http://hearthtax.org.uk/

The icons on my tablet are too small for me to do the link properly.

It's not a good interface, and you'll have to dig about a bit, but I could find quite a few pages a few minutes ago. The Wayback Machine is always a good last thing to try.

Hi M&A

The Wayback machine is just timing out, pity. Archive.org have loads of great stuff but not much on hearth tax.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions, I haven't used the Wayback Machine before.

I think you should persevere with it. I'm not having any problems today, and while it will take you awhile to go through the different years available and the different areas of the touch-sensitive diagram below, there is a lot of information there.

I just realised that I had this site in my favourites. Shame it has gone.

I wonder what their exciting news is?

It was such a great resource that I wouldn't be surprised in FindMyPast have bought them out and added the once free resource to their stable of pay for resources.  :(

Yes, they are getting U3A volunteers to do a few parts of the country. Wouldnt be at all surprised to see it pop up on a PTV website soon.

Family history society VOLUNTEERS transcribed loads of stuff only to find it now pay to view, is that moral?

Martin  - I still cannot get Wayback Machine to work even though I've tweaked my antivirus access list. Just keeps timing out. The rest of their website works fine.

For those who want to see what it's all about, the background information on the original site is on The Wayback Machine (https://web.archive.org/web/20170801130757/http://www.hearthtax.org.uk:80/), but this doesn't archive databases, so you can't do any lookups.

Thank you for this direct link Chris, it sidestepped the timing out problem I had earlier.

The Durham Hearth Tax database is still up there, I'd already downloaded it but if anyone still wants it its at
http://www.hearthtax.org.uk:80/communities/durham/durhamsurnames1666L.pdf

It lists the names and places and whether they were paying or non paying solvents. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell you how many hearths each person had. That would have given me an indication of the wealth or poverty of each name and place.

I imagine you can do the same with the other counties:
Essex
Kent
London and Middlesex
Surrey
Westmorland
Worcestershire
Yorkshire - East Riding
Yorkshire - North Riding
Yorkshire - West Riding

Hopefully, when the site is up again, more info. of genealogical interest will be found.

I was looking for the Durham Hearth Tax returns online and I tried the Wayback machine and the other link posted by Gen Link Lass. Unfortunately the latter returns a 404 error and the former gives the very top of the list only.

Can anyone offer any suggestions or perhaps send me a copy of the PDF?

Eureka! At first I only got the first page on the list but then I clicked a couple of obscure links and got the whole list.

Many thanks

PS this was the link which worked:

I downloaded it as a PDF file, uploaded that to a very good OCR program and converted it to a text file. Then I ran a find and replace on Word to tweak it into an acceptable format, saved the result which I then uploaded to Excel. Bingo! Fully searchable and filterable.

There's an extra 'if' after the long string of numbers, otherwise they're the same :)

It’s a big ‘if’ as my old dad used to say. ;)

Sorry, just noticed it's an 'if_' which of course is even bigger than an 'if' but not quite as big as an 'IFF'  :D

Here is some info if you want the London data:
https://www.history.ac.uk/projects/research/hearth-tax

It refers to https://sas-space.sas.ac.uk/2578/ where you can download the complete Access DB to your own PC.

Your link is good and active. It appears to be material from the original site according to this article in the WDYTYA magazine.

https://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/news/hearth-tax-records-return-online/

Alas still no Northumberland records but Durham and Yorkshire are there.
