Title: Annie Wigham Seaham and John Richardson North Shields c1900
Post by: Thefamilyresearcher on Friday 13 April 18 15:18 BST (UK)
I am building a tree starting from my maternal grandparents and I’ve found a lot of confusing information on one side that I’m hoping someone might be able to help with.

John Richardson, can’t find specific date of birth but it seems he originated from North Shields and working back from his marriage in 1921 he seems to have been born around 1900

He married Annie Wigham in 1921 in Easington area (seaham specifically) however, the records show her Christian name as Sarah (?) they had a son in February 1922 John Richardson but seem to have divorced some time shortly afterwards. There is a record of Annie Wigham marrying Michal Bolton a sea captain from Seaham and having another child, Michael.

Annie seems to have had two female siblings, EVA (Tout nee Wigham who died in London in the 80s) and Ellen who seems to have lived in the York area.

Living relatives recall that John Richardson (Snr) lived at Springfield Gardens in North Shields in c1950 and that he remarried but that is as far as I’ve managed to get.

Has anyone else researched the same lines?

Which records do you have which give Sarah and not Annie?

Yes, that’s Annie’s second marriage. Is there a way to find out when she divorced and on what grounds?

Thank you Heywood  :)

It looks as though Annie Bolton (Richardson) bn 1903 is in Kent prior to WW2  ???

To get further back on John Richardson senior I think you may have to purchase the marriage certificate.
You can order it here using the details provided earlier

Have you any idea what happened to John junior after his parents split up.

Hi Thefamilyresearcher,

Welcome to RootsChat. :)

I have found the North Shields marriage at the North Shields library in the local studies department.  This is on microfilm:

Holy Trinity Church, North Shields
Entry No: 123
November 6th, 1921
John Richardson and Annie Wigham
His age: 25
Her age: 18
Bachelor and Spinster
John's profession: Carpenter
Residence for both: 35 Penman Street
Fathers:
Walter Richardson - Caulker
James Wigham - Mariner
John and Annie signed their names
Witnesses were Margaret Richardson and Samuel Shipley (both witnesses signed their names)

From this record it would appear that John's date of birth was around 1896

Perhaps John's parents may have been Walter Richardson who married Margaret Pickering  at Holy Saviour, Tynemouth in 1895. They only hold details in book form of marriages between 1861 and 1879.  Also they have baptisms between 1861 and 1905 neither John or Annie were baptised at this Church.

Unfortunately, the local studies do not hold this record of the marriage of Walter and Margaret.  I think Tyne and Wear Archives would be likely to have this, however.

'RICHARDSON - At 16 William Street West, on Sept. 3rd, aged 72 yrs., Margaret Elizabeth, wife of the late Walter Richardson.  Interment Preston Cemetery, Friday 2.45 p.m., leaving residence 2.30 p.m.  Private.'

Hi heywood,

Yes this should be recorded as Wigham on marriage above and not Duggan. (Post 29) This was an autocorrect error - thanks for telling me I will amend post to right name.

There is a lovely memoriam in the Shields Daily News dated Friday October 28, 1938:

RICHARDSON.- Treasured memories of my dear husband.  Walter, who died October 28th, 1937. - Though his smiles have gone forever.  And his hands we cannot touch, We shall never lose sweet memories, of the one we loved so much.  The flowers we lay upon his grave may wither and decay.  But the love for him who lies beneath, Will never fade away, for us he always did his best, May God Grant him eternal rest.- Sadly missed.- Always remembered by his loving wife and family.'

Yes, I think this memoriam is lovely too - one of the most beautifully worded I have come across.

I think this is likely to be Margaret's memoriam in the Shields Daily News dated Wednesday, September 3, 1947:

'RICHARDSON.- Treasured memories of our mother and father, who died Sept. 3, 1946 and Oct. 28, 1937.  Not just today, but every day, we will remember them. - Always remembered by their family.'

Walter's burial entry at Preston Cemetery:

Entry No: 1812
Walter Richardson
Male
68 years
Profession: Caulker
Place where death occurred: 45 Gardner Street
Burial: 1 November 1937
Ceremony performed by J McDonald Queen
Unconsecrated  Ground 12743
Parish: North Shields

Margaret's burial:
Entry: 371
Margaret Elizabeth Richardson
Female
72 years
Housewife
Date of death: 3rd September 1946
Place where death occurred: 16, William Street West, North Shields
Burial: 6th September 1946
Unconsecrated Ground: Section C  12743
Parish: North Shields

As they both share the same grave I think this is likely to be a purchased grave and therefore they may have a gravestone.

Just to point out that the school records posted are not the right ones - John Richardson b.27/12/1898 was the son of a Walter Edward and Mary Elizabeth Richardson and actually a John William Richardson - his brother Walter born 2 years later.

Looks like Annie's husband John Richardson was born 29/7/1896 (son of Walter and Margaret) and died in Mar.qtr.1978 North Tyneside.
