Title: girling alfred henri samuel
Post by: ozlady on Wednesday 16 May 18 05:33 BST (UK)
He;s a bit of a mystery man, this one!

First appearance 1881 UK census. Lives with father Thomas at 255, New Cross Rd. Greenwich. He marries Sarah Ann Purchase Mar. 1883 in Malling, Kent.

The next appearance is 19/10/1886 when he disembarks the "Chyebassa' in Brisbane with wife Mary Ann, infant Felix born JFM 1886 Medway Kent.

I assume he's back in South Africa by 1899 where daughter Audrey Elizabeth Marian is born followed by Cecil Alfred in 1903, he dying later that same year.

Then there's big gap........... he doesn't appear until he gets murdered in 1914!!!

Where did he embark the "Chyebassa"?  What happened to Sarah Ann? When did he return to South Africa and come back again to Australia?

Any help or suggestions to fill the gaps would be greatly appreciated (and stop me pulling my hair out!!!!!)

The newspaper report of his murder states he had been in Australia for 10 months, so that would make it about January 1914. His grave index card shows wife as Sarah Church.

Please would you change your heading so the man's surname is in uppercase lettering. Bit confusing as to which name is given and which surname.

There are also children born to AHS GIRLING and Sarah Ann Church in Queensland:

1888   B40364   George William   Girling
1889   B44417   Vida Irene   Girling
1890   C4886   Arthur Bates   Girling
1894   C3823   Gladys Ruby Eva   Girling
1895   C4159   Leslie Vivian   Girling
1897   C4009   Albert Norman   Girling

So, presumably he was in Qld until 1896/7 depending on the date of conception of Albert Norman.

Similarity between names of father and son seem to have caused some confusion in a couple of on-line trees which indicate that AHS's father also had another variation on the forenames, and also seems it have come to Queensland.

Once again, happy to post more info if you want it.

What happened to Sarah Ann? When did he return to South Africa and come back again to Australia?

Sarah Ann died 25th April 1953.

This information comes from the digitised WW1 record of her son Norman Albert GIRLING.
She had a pension from the government because he was killed in action during his overseas action.

Thank you everyone for your help, some questions resolved, some remain, some pop up for the first time! I will sift through it all and get back to you all!

I apologise for my tardy response. My beautiful dog died Thursday morning, so I've been in a bit of a daze, still am actually.

If I am reading this news item posted by Gerry correctly.

Thomas LLEWELLYN, was the accused (later acquitted)
He was marriad to Marcia
Mary Ann DAVIES  was married to James DAVIES, and she was nee LLEWELLYN, being Thomas' sister.

Mary Ann deserting her husband and numerous children  ran away with Alfred GIRLING and called herself GIRLING. Alfred also deaerted spouse and numerous children.

The couple went to South Africa where Mary Ann had three children, all Alfred's.
Thomas her brother went to SA too for a while.

So the births you are seeing in your opening post in South Africa, are not Sarah Ann's but Mary Ann's.

One of the three was alive at the time of the trial, named Ruby.

Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser. Wed 14 Oct 1914
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/151018779

"Up until a little over 12 months ago she had resided with Girling. Three children were born to her of which Girling was the father. Two were dead and one (Ruby) living……..She made three visits to Australia from South Africa in connection with the children by her lawful husband ….. "

For your interest.

Obituary Mary Ann DAVIES. Published 29th Nov, 1928

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/21349607

Apart from her children with James DAVIES, there is mention of "another" at Maryborough.

This seems likely to be Ruby.

Incorrect.Struck through
Ruby married in Brisbane and lived at Wynnum and divorced in Brisbane too.

Again, thank you! My neighbour, whose grandfather this chap was, is amazed!

The bit that confuses me is "wife of James Davies, whom she had left 10 years ago, when she went to South Africa with deceased" followed by " about 13 years ago, when witness came over from South Africa"............. maybe I'm missing something??

Well, the few pieces of documented evidence show this.

Order re. desertion by Alfred of his family 1898
Child born in South Africa 1899. This was probably Audrey, child of Mary Ann and Alfred.

So it seem like 12/13 years from then to the time of the trial in 1914.
