Title: Pitts family
Post by: MacGrigor on Wednesday 16 May 18 16:30 BST (UK)
Hello,

My Pitts ancestor, Thomasine, was christened in Upton Pyne in 1780. Her father was Benjamin Pitts. I believe him to be the Benjamin Pitts christened in 1746 in nearby Tiverton, a) because it's nearby and b) it's a fairly uncommon name. The Pitts line goes back to 1713, with another Benjamin Pitts marrying Amey White in Tiverton. Can anyone find a baptism for either of these two? I note there is one in Newton St. Cyres for Benjamin but I'm not sure.

I'd appreciate any help!

Adam

I have also never found a marriage for Thomasine's parents, Benjamin and Ann Pitts.

Hello
That 1713 marriage gives Amey White of Somerset.
Benjamin Pitt is a late baptism at Tiverton
Benjamin Pitt s of Roger 8.7.1702 born 1 August 1684.

There is sister Mary born 5.7.1695 bapt 15th July
Roger 21.1.1690
Thomas 27.4.1693

It seems Roger and Rachel Wright didn't marry until 11.2.1689

I'd go for Dad Roger baptised 28.8.1662 s of Roger
With his sister Marie 31.8.1660 and Elizabeth 20.12 1650.

There's a Roger marrying Marie Coadley 6.10.1659 wit John Pitt and Joane Lipman.
There was a Will and Admin for Roger in 1681 but I don't know if they have survived.

For Benjamin and Ann I'd go for Newton St Cyrus 6.1.1767 to Ann Heward
There are  James 24.2.1768,Mary 30.11.1769 and John 23 Dec 1771 bapt 12.1.1772 baptised there before the move to Upton Pyne and Betty in 31.10.1773.

Thanks! I found Roger Pitt born in 1630 in Tiverton.

I found a christening for Rachel Wright in 1668 in Cruwys Morchard; could this be her? Does her 1689 marriage indicate where she came from? The parish is 4-5 miles west of Tiverton apparently.

I've failed to find a single christening for an Amey White in Somerset  :'(

Hello Adam
No more info on that marriage in 1689 for Roger and Rachel Wright I'm afraid. It's just their names with a date.
There is a burial for her 7.5.1746 at Tiverton so a date of birth 1768 would be good .Cruwys Morchard is only three or four miles away so would fit nicely.
(Rachel d of Benjamin was buried 25.7.1750)

I'm assumig you already have all her brothers and sister and the marriage of parents Humphrey Wright and Agnes Maunder 7th Sept 1659 which has no extra details.
Burial for Humphrey 22.1.1672 , 8.7.1688,19.2.1695 ,4.5.1701 son of Phillip Wright and 14.6.1703 of the parish of Taunton yeoman  all at CM.

There were probate documents for 1688 Tiverton,1692 CM and 1703 Tiverton but who knows if they survived once again.
It looks like Agnes was buried at Tiverton 17.9.1725 widow

There were two men having children about the time Humphrey would have been born Henry and Thomas Wright ad they both made Wills.Henry's was a PCC Will and is on Ancestry, but  Thomas's  was in Devon.I can't see a baptism for a Humphrey.

I can't see an Amy White either.

Sorry

Can you find anything on Nicholas Curry and Sarah Patey, who married in 1780 in Tiverton?

Good Morning
Had a look here's what I have
Nicholas Curry buried Tiverton 28 June 1835 age 83 so born 1752
Sarah Curry buried  Tiverton  14.1.1815 age  57 so born 1757 (of Town of Tiverton).
burial for another Nicholas Curry 12.3.1778
Nicholas Curry admitted to the Workhouse 1.7.1776 reason -An aged man
There is an apprenticeship record for a Nicholas Cory of Tiverton carpenter 1744 taking an apprentice Marmaduke Williams for £3

I would guess that Nicholas born c 1752 is the son or of the other Nicholas carpenter of 1744.
So Nicholas s of Nicholas and Joane at Linkinhorne Cornwall 24.6.1752 might fit.
Nicholas married Joan Pellow 12.6.1743 at Altarnum.
Joane Currey buried 29.6.1777 at Tiverton
Children Elizabeth 1.6.1746 at Linkinhorne ,Joanne 2.10.1748,Mary 11.11.1750,Nicholas 1753,Alice 14.3.1756,Jane 6.10.1758 St Germains ,John 1.6.1760 and Arthur 5.1.1763.

There is a Nicholas s of Nicholas and Elizabeth Cory at Altarnum bapt  20 Sep 1713
Siblings William Mar 1716  and John 4.1.1710

This could be Nicholas's brother and his wife back at Tiverton.
Mary Curry d of Thomas and Mary at Tiverton 27.4.1765 bapt 8th May .Mary buried 8th May as well.

possible sons at Exeter st Mary Steps Thomas Cory 5.10.1762 and William 5.10.1763
Marriage at Exeter St John to Mary Griffin 17.9.1760 Thomas a joiner of St Hallows of the Walls Exeter. She was a widow.

Thomas s of Nicholas bapt 8 Dec 1737 born 20 Nov 1737 at Tiverton
Nicholas Currey married Elizabeth Badcock 27.2.1727
Elizabeth Curry buried 1.1.1728

Nicholas  Corry s of George bapt at Bickleigh 1.4.1683

Everything in bold is Tiverton  and I'm guessing 3 generations of Nicholas Curry's.
I know that's pushing it and trying to shoehorn things in.So see what you think.

I'll have a go at Sarah next

Me Again
Sarah Patey bapt Tiverton s of John and Joan Patey 12/21 Dec 1756 with twin sister Mary.
Mary buried 4.3.1757.
Another sister Joan 19 Sep 1759/bapt 4 Oct.
Brother John over at Bicklleigh 8.3.1752 of Priors Quarter Buried 5.4.1833 there and Sarah there 15 Sep 1755. Strangely she's buried at Tiverton 28.8.1755.

John Patey married Joan Bell at Tiverton 27 Dec 1751

Looks like John is the son of John baptised 23 Aug 1719 and born 7th.
Siblings Martha 19/22 .1.1717,Elizabeth 1/7/ Dec 1720,Thomas 10/17.2.1722,Thomas 8/19 .4.1724,Thomas 11/20,11,1724,Richard 5/16.2.1725,Richard 7 Dec /24.2.1727,Prudence 26 Feb /12 Mar 1728,Sarah 11/17.4 1730,Thomas 7/28.7.1731,Sarah 25 Apr/10.5.1734,Martha 1/12.8.1737,Mary 15 Dec 1739/19.4.1740

But it looks like there are two John Pateys
John married Sarah Johns 26.12.1720 and
John married Martha Hill 12.5.1717
So yours must be the son of John and Martha but some of those siblings will be the other couple.

Your John senior died 1746/7 leaving a Will for his widow Martha in 1747.He was a healmaker.
Burial 2.7.1746.
It looks like Martha remarried 28th Oct 1752 to Richard May at Tiverton
She was buried 26.3.1758.

That's all I have
